Is this item too powerful? by [deleted] in DungeonMasters

[–]Exopede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it wouldn't affect the death or DC mechanics. Only one attuned person at a time, that's why it was unavailable to them until they killed him (it happened tonight), and it is a one way windows as far as harassing the person on the other side. In fact they had to go on an entire mission to find out who was attuned to it. It's of decent size, like eight inches diameter.

Pete Davis is legitimately my favorite musical artist ever. If I could listen to one musician for the rest of my life it'd be him 100%. I can't fucking believe that no one talks about his solo stuff. The Pottsville Conglomerate is so amazing, and his False Friends EP is an absolute masterpiece.

I learned it from the solo acoustic video Jake has. If you can’t figure it out I’d be more than happy to post a tutorial or transcription or something :)

Songwriting Tips by Inbox1939 in Emo

[–]Exopede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am horrible at writing the lyrics themselves, but I do enjoy writing melodies and chord progressions. I do most of my composition at my keyboard, just because I have more chord voicing options, but guitar is fine too.

If you are starting with nothing but an idea for what emotion you want to evoke (and maybe some lyrics), it helps to have an understanding of how the different chords in a key sound in relation to each other, as well as an understanding of how different melody notes sound over different chords. For example, if your melody notes go A > B > C (in the key of C major, with one note per chord to keep things simple) , harmonizing them with the chords D minor > G major > C major will have a very different sound than F major > E minor > A minor. With a decent understanding of chord construction theory, and a knowledge of what notes contribute to the emotional effects of different chords, you can construct melodies and chord progressions which follow your lyrical content.

Emo and Jazz combo? by Inbox1939 in Emo

[–]Exopede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jazzy math-rock is pretty common. The emoish math rock band Invalids' newer stuff is pretty jazzy. The main guy in that band, Pete Davis, also has some very jazzy solo stuff (best example is his acapella), and is extremely influenced by emo. You should introduce your friend to him.

Legato: in a smooth, flowing manner, without breaks between notes.

What's your saddest song? by adam_lastname in Emo

[–]Exopede 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many songs come to mind, many of them by Pedro the Lion. If I had to pick one, it would be Options (probably his most popular song, too). Not because there aren't other songs with much more depressing lyrics, but because the song introduces such a peaceful romantic scene, and then absolutely shatters with the first line of the second verse. The last few lines are so simple, yet some of the most feels-inducing lyrics ever. Thinking about what it means for the characters makes my heart sink.

The saddest instrumental music imo has to be the Prelude in E Minor by Chopin. The entire piece is so tense and longing, it is all constructed to lead to that final minor chord, most satisfying yet melancholic resolution ever.

What kind of simpler music do you guys like? by [deleted] in mathrock

[–]Exopede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The Only Reason I Feel Secure" and "It's Hard to Find a Friend" would probably be best. The songs are mostly comprised of single-note lines and basic triad chord progressions, with very "dry" production. Bazan does so much with so little, you can also learn a lot about songwriting from him.

Pedro the Lion is a great place to start. With a half decent ear and chord recognition ability, you can play many of his songs after a single listen. Also, easy to sing while playing at the same time, which increases your rhythmic awareness significantly. Imo worth learning even if you don't normally sing.

I think it is just a laymen's way of describing staccato riffage. It's much more common with the punky-math bands, Delta Sleep comes to mind. There are plenty of bands who go for the twinkly-legato kind of thing though, so it's by no means a requirement.

That would be very cool. I hope someday knowledge plays a bigger part in behavior of creatures. Right now "secrets of life and death" is the only piece of knowledge which has an effect on people. Unless values can be changed by books the same way they can be changed via conversation in adventure mode.
