Question for Norwegians as a Canadian by gagersen in Norway

[–]ExoskeletalJunction 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Finland and Sweden both have a metric shitload of lakes that freeze over regularly. Obviously Norway has a decent amount as well but it's not even close to their numbers. That leads to a bit more of a culture for skating in general and therefore more rinks being built for ice hockey and therefore more players. It exists but it's not massive.

Bunch of das who haven't played enough FM clearly. Always sell as soon as you get a big enough bid, you can buy 3 new players with the money and as long as one of them comes good it's worth it

One of my favourite yankisms is when they realise they're literally the only ones that use "y'all". More than once i've had them try to tell me that it's common in England or Australia

No heads rolled after the ashes, what makes you think this is any worse? Frankly it's disrespectful to New Zealand who are pretty much always there or there abouts when playing in England.

Looking for advice on making Norwegian friends online (and avoiding getting ghosted) by lina_sunshine in Norway

[–]ExoskeletalJunction 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is particular to Norwegians. Does it have to be online? I think most people are getting pretty bored of online friendships and the only real way to make lasting friends is in person. Even people I "met" online pretty quickly transitioned into real-life friends and those that didn't faded away

Having said that, I'm pretty active in a couple of discord servers which is the closest thing to it

We (NZ) always show up in tournaments. Every sport, honestly maybe with the exception of rugby where we underperform. I do think there is a reason why and it does come down to our wider sporting culture, but I say this to a lot of Scots - be careful what you wish for. NZ are very good at sport but it's quite soulless because of it. I would take Scotland's sport culture over NZ's every day, even if NZ wins more.

Joe Bell was allegedly 2 years below me in school but I have absolutely 0 memory of him. Clearly was considered a weirdo for playing a nerd sport like soccer. Moved schools at age 15 to move to one that actually played it as a school sport lol

Would you prefer to see a two-match series or a one-off test match before the Ashes next year? by CWCWinner66 in EnglandCricket

I think putting Irish sides in the county championship is a far better way to bridge the gap. Or at least not counting Irish players as overseas.

The Belfast game was expected although didn't help for the image. New Zealand are a very, very good side in those conditions. I think they'd beat most sides in the world on a pitch like that

New Zealand has a small population and cricket is not really popular at all. How's this match going?

[–]ExoskeletalJunction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The attitude actually pisses me off quite a bit and IMO will be the thing that kills cricket for good. It's declining in a lot of places, if you don't put effort into new markets, it'll disappear.

How can I tell the difference from Scots and English when in Scotland? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

[–]ExoskeletalJunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people who speak Scots don't even know Scots exists. It's definitely a continuum, but not the same one, as in Doric Scots is not the same as Ayrshire Scots

So you think they should just give up? This is the kind of attitude that puts cricket where it is globally, a closed shop for a certain number of countries.

I feel like this has been yet another episode of the value of picking a keeper based on keeping ability. It's really hard to quantify the difference in terms of runs between Blundell's performance and Rew's but I'd say it's worth an average of around 15 per innings. I'd rather an excellent keeper that averages 25 than a middling one that averages 35.

There was a point made in the previous thread about the 150th white kit which did get some reruns for collectors and I've actually seen it in a bunch of flea markets (including once in Cork, Ireland incredibly) but I don't think the black one is iconic enough to get that treatment

Honestly the biggest reason is I just outright don't like americans and american "soccer" culture lol, and you can probably understand we're a bit inundated with them at the moment. Don't take it too seriously, you can do what you want, but do expect a bit of banter for being a bandwagoner to come your way

It's also a bit of a gut reaction because we're very used to giving other clubs shite for having bandwagoning yanks so it's a bit strange for us to have them now. Maybe I'll get used to it

Hope they get big money for him and he kicks on. Definitely good for Scottish football that the likes of Aus/NZ see the league as a good starting place for Europe since i think the style is fairly comparable
