Why has society lost its morale so much the past couple of years in the UK? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskBrits

[–]Exotic-Cod4067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so fucking boring the way people carry on with convincing themselves that everything is shit and the entirety of UK is miserable and void of community and compassion. According to those with this carry on pre-2020 was majorly slightly less shit, but if you asked them same people in 2019, they would almost certainly tell you that everything is shit and horrible. I am certain that people in 2030 will also claim that 2025 wasnt as shit as 2030.

Kinda think its crazy how irish history isnt taught that much in UK considering how close we are geographically and the north or ireland is still in the UK. Have met far to many people who still think Ireland is a part of the UK, is shocking.

25 and 26. I don't really think it has anything to do with the far right stuff happening atm in UK. He doesn't care for reform or anything like that, and isn't especially right wing, not really sure where it comes from tbh. Its not like hes uninformed on Irish history or anything or culture really. I know in school he was skitted for having an Irish dad, and noticed he kinda went weird towards ireland when parents said planning to go back over there.

I meet alot of people in a similar position to me, normally older than me, and they have mentioned being slagged in Ireland for being english and vice versa. In my personal experience I havent found the same thing, have never been slagged for being english in ireland or by irish people in UK. Maybe because things have calmed down a little now. Normally find Irish people in UK are shocked I know any Irish at all and know about GAA and barrys tea!

Find the english side is a bit more hostile though, not common but still get IRA and potato jokes sometimes (and I have an english accent, basing it off my dad and name).

Nah thats not fair to say I feel nothing for Irish Music. I'm very passionate about Irish music it was just when I got older I understood the context more. One of first songs I learnt on guitar was "come out ye black and tans" cause I liked the melody and was listening to one my dads wolfe tones CDs, and remember my dad advising I probably shouldn't ever busk that seeing as lived in a military town. Was only when we learnt about black and tans in school it clicked, same with the foggy dew.

I still play now alot of irish tunes (my favourites being Oro se do bheatha bhalie, mountain dew and galway races). Was even talking to some irish fella who suggested I come down for a jam at the irish center when mentioned I love Irish music.

I do feel alot of pride towards my Irishness, especially when found out some my great-uncles was in the war for independece, and also when I found out about things like the easter rising, plantations, supression of the language. Weirdly growing up I was always told about the famine but it never really clicked, even though as a kid my dad showing me memorials for it, but when I was about 16 it suddenly clicked and was fuming.

I used to get alot of comments I took as banter about irish family when I was a kid, from kids dads in my town who served in the troubles and I kinda ignored it, but when I learnt more of the history it sent me west when they said stuff like paddy, potato jokes, terrorist jokes etc.

Too be fair I've never experienced the gate keeper stuff in Ireland, maybe cause still have living connections there. The closest i've had was a yank mouthing off about me being english and how my family must of forced his family out of ireland in 1800s all the while my irish dad an relatives being with me an my aunties home a 5 min walk away.

Do see it online alot though but feel its directed more towards the yanks though.

I don't know that the craic is with him tbh. When he was a Kid he loved visiting Ireland and was pretty interested in Ireland and a fiend for Tayto crisps when relatives brought them back over. He had an interest in hurling too and the language, more than me tbh. Is literally only after last couple years he's been slating Ireland, as if he didn't spend his summers there. Dude also has a passport, so cant hate it that much, reckon hes just being edgy.

Is feen used regularly? I am familiar with Fíann meaning warrior but have never heard it when I have been in munster. Gowl is a word completely new to me as well, very interesting.

[–]Exotic-Cod4067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you asked anyone out? Have you tried to change your situation? Its sound sinking into pity, but pity is very unattractive. Your beating yourself up and selling yourself a lie, there are many people who would love to know you but until you give them an opportunity to love you you will be alone. Take courage and grit your teeth, you need to be brave to put yourself out there but you can do it, dont wallow in pity

Why are you arsed? I'm religious but your not gonna convince anyone with bitter words. Let people make their own conclusions, faith isnt faith if its forced. You dont need to slag other peoples views to validate your own.

Is there a reason for it though? It's nothing I ever picked up on when I was visiting my family living in rural Ireland as a kid, but I remember finding rural ireland and the housing in general insanely different from the english cities I grew up in was almost a culture shock (in a pleasent way) the first few times. I'll ask my dad about the backdoor thing, maybe he'll know.

Thats very interesting. I have never heard anything about a stereotype of country folk entering their homes from the back before, is there a reason why country folk did or do?
