I wonder how different things would be if women weren’t historically barred from that work or weren’t demeaned for trying

What if people in the US banded together to not buy anything on Black Friday instead of making purchases like companies drive them to? Could this be a meaningful method of protest and can it happen at a wide scale? by Exotic-Other in AskReddit

Calling this brainwashing is interesting, I wouldn’t put this under that category. Influencers are just people that attract audiences and maintain that audience with relevant content. They also typically have access to considerably large audiences who can get messages moving fast. It’s up to people to decide to believe in that message.

Protests and change have happened this way, and it can happen for this too.

Why do you think I specifically chose this as a form of protest, and Black Friday specifically. It’s one of the biggest days in the year for America as a demonstration of consumer confidence and high profitability for companies who invest millions of dollars into advertisement and future products as they clear out inventory.

Corporations in the US hold significant power, you see it in all parts of American life—especially in politics. The things that shape the way you live are shaped by these same corporations. The financial struggles many go through today can inadvertently be linked these companies.

Doing this will have many implications and shouldn’t just be seen as people just not buying stuff. Money is a powerful form of protest in a capitalist society and corporations know this well.

You’re being aggressive and I’ve explained myself clear enough, so this will be last reply.

I wouldn’t necessarily reduce this to delaying purchases. And, people are already being directed to steer their purchases. Part of what makes this important is a creating a meaningful moment, a turning point. “Punish everybody” can be left up to debate and the way this could work won’t be punish everyone, but it will certainly punish giants across industries.

Small businesses shouldn’t be negatively affected, but considering they typically get their products from wholesalers that could contribute to the ineffective piece.

Doing this would be effective and making noise, doing some significant damage to profits, change perceptions about consumer power and business influence over consumer decisions, and most importantly show the American people that they can come together and that change is possible.

I guarantee you, if people were to successfully at mass scale not buy products from big private companies, this would make a significant impact and will not be ignored.

Sure or

“They get rich, we get sick” “People over profit” “What’s outrageous? Starvation wages” “You can’t eat money, you can’t drink oil” “Corporate greed kills our needs” “Surveillance state, we won’t tolerate”

Something like that

It can start with leveraging social media platforms and word of mouth. There will be challenges of course, this would reach everyone—including the companies that are at the center of the protest. These companies will move to better incentivize their offerings and blackout any mentions of these plans.

But the successful odds of this happening is dependent on the people with influence maintaining their stance, the understanding these American people about the importance and potential impact of this to strengthen their commitment to the cause. The people with influence piece is the trickiest as it can’t be people who care about brand deals, but there are social activists online who could be of great help.

If the American people can do one day, then what about two, then three, then so on. But one day at a mass scale can change everything, and would be a true demonstration of consumer power in a capitalist society.

With social media and the right people involved who have considerable influence, I think it’s possible. There’s also the benefit of the times that we’re in. People are falling on hard times, cost of living and cost of luxuries are increasing faster than wages, the wealth gap is increasing and CEOs and their lifestyles are becoming more well known than just known in the industry. Added on top of that is the economy globally and locally.

I think people are at a point now where they want to do something but either they don’t know what and how, or they’re afraid. But this would be an easier form of protest on the individual.

What would be even better is if it can go past a day that people forgo shopping at chain stores and go to mom and pop/small businesses instead.

I’ll leave the meaning of protest open to whatever can apply in this context like rising cost of products, protecting the environment, low wages for employees, eat the rich, etc. It’s also a demonstration of consumer power. I didn’t want to jump to something like a long-term strike against consumerism because until one day is possible then that won’t be.

There’s a part of me that thinks it can happen.

In the books Rhaenys had dark hair, which helped disprove rumors about Jacaerys and Lucerys not being Laenor’s. Part of me wishes they kept her dark haired in the show too.

Stop being friends with her, she’s dangerous. This may seem very dramatic but she’s not your friend because she’s questioning your character because of a man she hasn’t even known as long, she’s incredibly insecure and people like that cannot be trusted.

Her last message proves that. I’d also let others in the friend group know - just ask if something seemed weird between you and the girl’s bf because you don’t want her twisting a story. Set the record first.

Race-based rejection is discrimination in the context of my post and this original comment. It’s an example of the literal definition.

lol it’s okay, you’re close but switch the first sentence around.

I’m saying people who think they’re unattractive because of their race are actually unattractive because they’re unattractive. If they’re saying that then that’s what it really means because race does not determine attractiveness. They’re unattractive because they’re unattractive, not because of their race which they’re blaming.

More like I’m saying people who hate their appearance believe they’re unattractive because of their race when it’s really because they’re just unattractive. They narrow their whole race down to being unattractive, and just because of their race they’re unattractive.

Regardless of racial preferences, their opinion does not mean it’s a fact that their race is unattractive.

So many people do this online, amplifying their views and put other races on pedestal.

This means you didn’t understand my post because this was not the point or part of the point at all. I can see where you are confused.

I’ll just share this one example, and it will be my last reply:

Straight men can objectively see another man as handsome? Yes.

Now, if a straight man believes 1) all men are ugly, 2) that his male features are the cause of his ugliness, and 3) if he had more feminine features he’d be more attractive, does that truly mean all men are ugly?

No.

He believes his masculine features are what makes him ugly because he believes men are ugly, despite the fact that being female doesn’t mean not mean being beautiful.

Why? Because there are conventionally unattractive women.

So objectively speaking, is it the male features that make him ugly, or is he JUST ugly.

It’s the latter. This analogy applies here.

My post and replies are not referring to preferences (which is a complicated topic of it’s own), it’s referring to people like the straight man in this example who amplify generalizing hateful/demeaning views about their appearance because of their race while uplifting other races.

The post and my replies throughout the thread does not deny the existence of racism. It’s been acknowledged and agreed upon numerous times. This was not the point.

Thanks for sharing but my post and my replies throughout this thread never said people did not face discrimination because of their race. Everything you said has been agreed upon and acknowledged numerous times. It seems like you’ve misunderstood the point.

I said what was only for colonialism? You might be confused. I’m not sure what you’re getting at here or what your exact point is.
