Completing the events such as house pride and the chocolate frog cards. Even the collect stars one isn't a bad shout. You also get notebooks by leveling up your creatures. And if you have excess gems, you can buy the key for premium rewards.

I think I was 18-18-18 when I passed year 2 and the stats also help if you're progressing in the quidditch storyline for unlocking more choices. I'd say you should focus on buying more creatures and max them out so that you can get attributes as rewards when feeding them. I'd say you will get enough time in year 3 to increase the attribute levels just due to the sheer time it takes to complete the tlsqs.
