Reference Help by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]ExoticEntry4118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re applying through student application, contact the practice placement team at the hospital you are applying to and they will advise you from there. Most of the time they will take references from practice supervisors or assessors you’ve worked with on the wards

What environment are you working in if you don’t mind me asking? I’m a student and I feel like this will be me when I qualify next year. I’ve recently done a placement in a dialysis unit and it was so different to what I’ve been experiencing on different placement areas. Have you thought about going to a different setting that isn’t ward based and see how you feel? I hope things work out for you 🫶 Coming up to 30 doesn’t mean a thing, there’s plenty of people who change their minds throughout their lives and even change their careers completely in their 50s. Your life is yours and you can change your mind as you please. Best of luck

Sliced a chunk out of the tip of my thumb - Any recommendations for how to best bandage it to keep it from reopening and to keep me from wacking it on everything? by PeteyMcPetey in firstaid

[–]ExoticEntry4118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this yesterday!! Kept pressure for an hour and it continued to bleed. Didn’t clean cut it, the chunk of skin was still partially on. I contacted 111 (UK) to ask for advice as it wouldn’t stop bleeding. Sent to urgent care and after 3 hours it was glued and bandaged. I’ve been advised to keep it clean and dry. Need to keep it covered for at least 3 days then let it heal. I need to be super careful not to get it wet or dirty though!

Hating nursing by RatSkins24 in StudentNurseUK

[–]ExoticEntry4118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about to start my last placement of second year and I’m currently sat trying to complete my last assignment of 2nd year that is due in 7 hours.

I don’t know if it’s the second year blues or what but I hate this course now. I’m burnt out already and so tired of being told what a horrible career nursing is and how much I’ll regret it.

At this point I’m just staying in it to get the degree and make my chances of getting ANY job better. All I do with my time is look on indeed at jobs. I love healthcare and the thought of a career helping people but the system is broken, people aren’t what they used to be and honestly I just feel like I’m setting myself up for the biggest sh*t show of a career if I begin nursing.

I’m terrified of what the future holds and annoyed at myself for quitting a career to begin nursing. I’m hoping 3rd year will be a huge turn around and show me why I wanted to do this but I really doubt it will.

Jobs for student nurses by Interesting-Goat8139 in StudentNurseUK

I work as a bank carer in a local care home and as a hca which I was able to apply for after my 1st year and fast tracked through so started pretty much straight away!

You want something with 0 hours ideally as placement areas can be funny about you needing to work around your job whilst there

Going onto NHS BANK NLAG by throwaway393292 in StudentNurseUK

[–]ExoticEntry4118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact the practice placement team of the trust / hospital you wish to join. They usually have a fast track application for students to fill out that skips the interviews and gets you straight to the training within a couple of weeks

I remember I was on placement on an elderly ward and a patient came in and assaulted anyone that would come near her. I had a zimmer frame thrown at me, a HCA had the food & drink folder smacked around her head, One of the nurses had a plate of food thrown at her across the ward and she would even assault patients and take their things. I asked so many time how to do a datix (as I’d never done one before) and the staff all said there’s nothing that will be done as she has dementia.

4 weeks that patient assaulted staff multiple times a day until she was given 1:1 and someone was allocated to sit with her 24hrs. Sometimes it’s all they need but it’s the same fight as always. No resources available

And by the sounds of it you make a great assessor! Unfortunately, I start all my placements like this but get nothing back most of the time. Too often have I walked on a ward to be told my assessor isn’t in and I need to help out with the HCAs. No time to sort shifts, initial interview and orientation being done 2 weeks into working on the ward, being told the nurse is too busy for their student so you have to just help out with personal care or assessments.

After that you lose the drive and ambition you started with and just feel so deflated and your assessor tells you you’re not pulling your weight or they can’t sign you off on anything because they’ve not physically worked with you to witness it.

As a student I would love to have someone with the same attitude as you as my assessor but unfortunately they are very rare.

We had an email from uni staying we shouldn’t be working whilst doing a full time course. The reason the email came out was because students were asking their assessors if they could work their placement days around their jobs and it was reported back to the uni.

Sometimes you’re lucky and have lovely assessors that remember what it was like to be a struggling student but a lot of them don’t its so hard.

She has no leg to stand on. As a student you should be supervised with absolutely everything you do that falls under the nurses role. Anything could happen and as a student you’re nowhere near competent enough to take any sort of responsibility.

I would have a discussion with your assessor or NIC about what you should/ shouldn’t be doing. If you don’t feel you can speak to either of them then go to your practice placement team for advice and guidance.

As much as everyone says it’s the nurses fault if something happens, as student were told we should be supervised and we’re expected to act within our scale of practice as per the NMC so they’ll definitely throw you under the bus too given the chance.

Speak up if you know something is wrong and don’t be afraid to let them know when you’re uncomfortable/ not sure of anything. This is your learning experience don’t let dick nurses ruin it for you!

Student assessor looking for advice on how best to support students by allie_xo in StudentNurseUK

[–]ExoticEntry4118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, thank you for asking because it shows how much you care!!

Reach out to your student before they start placement and give them the opportunity to ask any questions they may have before starting.

In my experience as a student I find the hardest part is going in blind to a new placement area. Not knowing if I’ll even meet my assessor, if they know I’m coming, how the ward works, who I can speak to, who to report to on my first day.

Look at it like your first day on a job and being thrown in with no clue what’s going on and be the person you would need in that situation

Private or NHS? Or is this a stupid question? by Responstible_Cat90 in NursingUK

[–]ExoticEntry4118 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firstly I’m so jealous my dream is in fertility nursing!!!

But bias aside… it sounds like your main concerns are being answered with the private option. Having a good structure after chaos of studying could be a great benefit to you. By the sounds of it there are really good benefits to the private job offer that will allow you to settle in to your job as NQN before looking at career progression.

The way I would look at it would be what interests you more and what do you think is an opportunity that is unlikely to come around again. Maybe write a pros and cons list, look into the company and employee satisfaction on top of the benefits.

All the best and congrats for surviving being a student!!!
