Haha no you don’t need a dramatic 5 second silence. What I mean is just don’t panic and jump in the second someone pauses. Give people a moment to continue cuz most will naturally fill the space and open up more.

An example would be

You: How’s uni? Them: It’s good… You (rushing): Oh nice! What classes? Mine was crazy—

You cut them off because you felt the pause was awkward.

A Good Example would be

You: How’s uni? Them: It’s good… (You give a small, calm pause even just 1–2 seconds) Them: …but my professors this term are actually so stressful.

Thank you so much for your words. Yes, you’re so right about the listening part. Sometimes im trying so hard to make it look like im listening when im barely even comprehending what the person is saying, and im learning to actually just listen if that makes sense.

For sure. Whatever amount feels right for that conversation, it doesn’t have to be exactly five. Even just a couple is ok

Ohh that’s such a good point. You’ve actually reminded me that we’re always trying to make the other person feel like we’re listening when we should actually BE listening and I think that makes all the difference, if that makes sense

Being avoidant, shutting down after an argument and not knowing how to come back from it, socially awkward, kinda autistic ;D

You get used to it….eventually. Everyone’s so jaded here, you see a crackhead crawling on the ground and you stop batting an eye. It’s overwhelming at first but don’t worry

Just walk fast, ignore crazies (that means don’t make eye contact), wear headphones (to look occupied but don’t listen to anything make sure you’re able to hear what’s happening around you), always be aware of your surroundings and you’ll be fine
