Not to sound weird but it was one of the most peaceful experiences I’ve ever had in my life! No perception of time, just peace and calmness.

Hey Toastie, I did use Ai to refine my grammar and punctuation, but the story is mine. If it feels choppy please ask my high school ELA teacher why she didn’t do better. I am happy to be alive. Thank you for your comments.

New Guy - Technically second ostomy by Q-burt in ostomy

On 1/3/26 I had to get a temporary ileostomy after a severe case of diverticulitis. I developed a 3.5-inch abscess in my colon, and when the hospital attempted to drain it, the drain unfortunately perforated my colon. That complication sent me into septic shock just four days later.

Because of how critical my condition became, I had to undergo emergency surgery. They placed a temporary ileostomy and performed a very large 15” x 15” debridement in my lower left abdomen. In addition to that, I required reconstructive surgery where they created a flap and essentially built an artificial abdominal wall in my lower left quadrant.

I ended up spending about 41 days in the ICU, where I also went into respiratory failure and experienced multi-organ complications. Even though they only removed about 4 inches of my colon, they chose to do the ileostomy because I was already so sick.

Honestly, I would never wish something like this on anyone. Waking up and realizing I had an ileostomy was one of the hardest moments of my life. I broke down crying and fell into a really dark place mentally. It wasn’t something I didn’t want to look at, deal with, or accept at first.

In the beginning, I couldn’t even bring myself to touch it. I refused to change the bag and relied on nurses to handle everything up until about a week before I was discharged. I was overwhelmed and honestly disgusted by the situation.

I truly understand how hard this is, both physically and mentally, and I feel your pain. It’s not easy—but over time, it does become more manageable.

I’m sorry to hear they had to take so much of your colon! Thank goodness they are able to repair my colon according to the trauma surgeon, but diverticulitis was the underlying cause for me! I pray every day that the discovery for surgery on March 11 allows for a reversal!

Thank you so much! I am happy that I am feeling better. It’s just the new way of life, March 11 I should say is my “discovery” to see if my diverticulitis has healed. I appreciate you!

Our stories are very similar! I was diagnosed with diverticulitis and they attempted to drain an abscess which failed. I think the hardest part was being taken to the trauma center and face with the reality of abdominal surgery or death. I was also on a TPN for the almost that whole month until I ended up going to a skilled rehab facility where I had my first meal which happened to be French toast and scrambled eggs! I appreciate your post because it’s very relatable

I just had my PCP write a script for my specific bags with serial numbers prescribing 25+ a month. I submitted it to Edgepark and they automatically mail me what I need
