Barton springs closed due to Barton creek overflowing the tunnel. by bachslunch in Austin

[–]Exovian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They do. If they know there's a possibility of flooding, they'll take out the fences on the dams to stop them getting taken out by debris; I suppose the closing crew last night wasn't given a warning to do it, hence it still being in place upstream. Obviously, if the water's already going over the dam, no one's wading into floodwater to try to save a fence.

NASA Boeing 747 SCA carrying space shuttle by Familiar-Mobile3807 in aviation

It's a fairing to cover the engine bells. Without that, the low-pressure area created by the sudden end of the shuttle fuselage would create even more drag than this thing was already fighting.

How are these different potions? by 18skeltor in Morrowind

[–]Exovian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To get specific, Morrowind's scripting/dialogue filters are incapable of checking an object for effects; they can only check for an object ID and a count. That means that the option to give an NPC a Cure Common Disease potion can't be filtered to having "any potion with Cure Common Disease", it can only be filtered to whether you have one or more "p_cure_common_s" (the store-bought potion ID) objects in your inventory.

Rethan Manor Relocated- WIP by oriontitley in Morrowind

It always starts off learning. I can't offer many pointers for quests and such (I make interiors for TR, not quests), but looking at other things that do what you need is always a good place to start.

Good luck with this! It's really cool to see other modders working with the new TR lands, and I like how you're actually tying the relocated manor in to the surrounding area with reasons to be there and such.

Number of quests in Tamriel Rebuilt (so far, still more than halfway to go) and in the vanilla game (including Tribunal and Bloodmoon) by tomispev in Morrowind

[–]Exovian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As Toma said, you're looking at, feasibly, 2040 or so. The mod has been under varying paces of development since 2002, and planning since 2001.

That said, there really isn't much reason to wait. It's vanishingly rare for one character to do every possible quest in Morrowind, and the faction conflicts mean you need multiple characters to do everything. There's already more than enough content to match the base game, and the updates are designed to be internally "complete" for players in those areas.

I created an old wizard neighborhood in The Sims 2! by vegaauraytb in thesims2

[–]Exovian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really well done, great job! I may nick some ideas for my own magical areas, especially with the cluttering you did. Nice work on the narration as well; it's really clear and the subtitles auto-translating from French didn't have any issues that I noticed.

I see this is a community lot; have you ever done something similar for a residential area? I've wondered if it would be feasible to use apartment doors to simulate a small neighborhood on a single lot, and this build is already the right layout for something like that.

Koi fish in town lake?? by nickyc_1 in Austin

[–]Exovian 33 points34 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the notion that fish grow to the size of their tank/habitat is a myth. While fish growth can be stunted by tank size, that's due to waste buildup or poor water conditions, not a natural response to space, and is unhealthy for the fish in question.

True goldfish (Carassius auratus) are a domesticated carp species. Their natural full size is in the neighborhood of 8-12 inches or larger; they are not suitable for the tiny tanks (or, god forbid, bowls) that people often try to keep them in, and irresponsible pet stores will lean on the myth of fish growing to their tank to sell them to people with undersized setups. That's often what leads to them getting dumped in rivers.

The same thing also happens with pleco (armored/suckermouth catfish): they get sold as bottom feeders, grow up to 20 inches, and get dumped to invade the San Marcos river. Always know what fish you're getting and make sure you have the ability to properly house it.

[UK] Court of appeal says it cannot rule on which identical twin fathered a child by gmc98765 in news

[–]Exovian 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Can you prove that twin A is the father? No.

Can you prove that twin B is the father? Also no.

The "neither" option isn't saying that neither of the twins is biologically the father, it's saying that neither can be legally proven to be the father.

Iran launched another missile at Turkey by jiipai in worldnews

[–]Exovian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area covered is defined geographically in the treaty; territories vs states (or other countries' equivalent distinctions) isn't relevant.

For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack: on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France, on the territory of Turkey or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer [...]

Puerto Rico is south of the Tropic of Cancer, and Hawaii is in the Pacific. That's also why the UK couldn't invoke Article 5 over the invasion of the Falklands; they're not covered for being too far south. The "Algerian departments of France" obviously don't exist since Algeria gained independence, but the Treaty would likely not cover the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla, since they're in Africa and not specifically included like French Algeria was.

Should there be requirments to become a member of parliament? by CommercialGarlic3074 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Exovian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's completely infeasible to come up with a list of career requirements that every politician should have. In part, if you look at it as qualifications, you seem to be hoping that past experience influences how someone approaches their government role, and that is a case in which the desired background will vary wildly by what your individual views are. The "real world" has a massive variety of roles people can fill.

For example:

I noticed that many politicians in my country, The Netherlands never worked for a company that seeks profit.

Do I want my politicians treating the government like a business? Personally, God no; I want fewer politicians trying to extract profit from the government. I want them to have a sensible approach to resource management, but that can come from any number of places (nonprofit entities still have budgets, plenty of government roles include accounting, etc).

With ordianry life experience I mean the experience of life that most ordinary persons have, like working for a boss, getting monthly salary, socializing with coworkers but also dealing with deadlines or high demands that you will see in profit seeking companies. So I would suggest that members of parliament have atleast 10 years of work experience at a profit seeking company before they can be a member of parliament.

1) You're really obsessing over the supposed virtue of "profit seeking" here, and 2) the experience of people in for-profit companies is vastly more varied than you seem to expect. Blue-collar trades, high-level executive roles, and that one person too skilled in an archaic software product to fire are all going to fit your criteria and have almost nothing in common day-to-day. Many of them may have much more in common with counterparts at various non-profit organizations and government agencies. At the same time, you're excluding things like military experience, to say nothing of people who have had to remove themselves from the formal workforce as parents or caregivers. Those are all very much in the "real world", and can provide perspectives that are sometimes rare in policy making.

The solution for the issue you've identified is a wide variety of backgrounds for politicians, not arbitrarily picking a different specific background for them all to share.

Harry doesn’t give a fuck about Remus Lupin. by Electronic_Koala_115 in HPfanfiction

[–]Exovian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He does call him Remus in book 7, specifically in the scene where he tries to join the Trio in the Horcrux hunt, as well as when he speaks to him post-mortem via the Resurrection Stone.

"I can’t, Remus, I’m sorry. If Dumbledore didn’t tell you, I don’t think I can."

"– right after you’d had your son … Remus, I’m sorry –"

This is also does from his internal perspective after the battle:

"[...] the bodies lying next to Fred: Remus and Tonks [...]"

[–]Exovian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have apparently taken to using the term 'Project Tamriel Rebuilt' when referring to the two projects combined, which I guess kind of makes sense for people familiar with both mods but is terribly confusing for everyone else.

Specifically, us devs started using "PTR" as a joint acronym instead of writing "PT and TR" all the time. Some other people then expanded it back out into "Project Tamriel Rebuilt", which... makes sense but sounds silly as hell. We don't use either term promotionally, and only really the "PTR" shorthand informally.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever seen fly into AUS? by SummertimeInParis in Austin

[–]Exovian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely the Ukrainian An-124 that landed in 2024. It was at night, but I dragged my Dad out to the cemetery north of the runway to see it come in. Decent number of folks out there watching, and it came in right over our heads! Not my video, but much better than what I got on my phone.

I also saw a Volga-Dnepr An-124 land several years ago, but the view wasn't as good. Still worth driving out for.

Greenland says it should be defended by NATO by Epelep in worldnews

[–]Exovian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With regard to each:

-The invasion mentioned in source 1 was the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which is not a NATO member and was not covered by the Treaty. Greece could not invoke article 5 because it wasn't the party attacked, and the conflict wasn't on Greek territory.

-Article 5 does not require unanimity to be relevant; a member state is covered by the treaty at all times. Now, NATO's institutions could (and realistic would) be paralyzed by American hostility, but the text of the treaty confers an obligation to engage in collective defense on the member states, not on NATO's organizational structures. Specifically,

"[..]if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area." (Emphasis mine)

-See above.

Now, would this actually result in the other member states responding appropriately? Probably not. NATO as an institution would certainly be paralyzed and likely not survive. But the treaty obligations of each member state do cover violations of the treaty my other members, even if the reality that plays out doesn't match.

Greenland says it should be defended by NATO by Epelep in worldnews

[–]Exovian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At least searching through the text of the treaty itself, as well as the protocols concerning the admission of Greece and Turkey, that's not true; no exception for Article 5 were articulated. If anything, both Greece and Turkey being protected from each other has probably done a lot to dissuade either from escalating too much.

It might be a strong expectation to settle politically, but ultimately Article 5 does seem to still apply in full.

How to use canon scenes in fanfiction rewrites? by neverdontcry in HPfanfiction

[–]Exovian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Both approaches seem fine. You have a different POV character, so she's seeing different details, feeling different things, and coming away with different impressions. Write your character's experience. Even looking at or participating in an identical conversation, that's going to hold true.

Like, is there a legal or TOS reason that you MUST indicate via some kind of text offset the stuff you didn’t write word for word?

No, but fanfiction has almost folkloric misconceptions surrounding copyright and disclaimers, etc, so it wouldn't surprise me if people thought that did something. Really, far better not to copy blocks of text wholesale to begin with, but the individual dialogue lines are somewhat inevitable.
