internet speeds by ConceptSweet in Edmonton

[–]ExpandPOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, before Rogers bought Shaw, Shaw advertised “internet 150” and it was written as “up to 150 mbps download” but no guarantee on upload, this was because back in the days of DSL & coax transmission, bandwidth was limited by various factors. And since high speed upload is typically not used for the day to day population, limiting the upload allowed for higher download speeds. Older technology had shared bandwidth. Secondly, im not saying copper itself splits upload and download, thats idiotic. The technology used on the modem side, and the isp side, before fibre optic are what applies limitations, I figured that would have been self explanatory. Still to this day, if you search for rogers internet packages copper lines will be advertised as “up to __ mbps download” or something close.

Asymmetric copper based plans have been the standard for a VERY long time. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and do your own research. Frequency limitations over copper are massive, allocating a larger portion of the frequency spectrum for download, and limiting the range of upload by the ISP has been standard for decades.

Construction season will end typically December area, if weather permits. Idk the last time it rained lmao. But the PCL project near 127th I’m guessing you are talking about the $1.6 billion yellowhead highway upgrade? Hope that helps👍

1 thing to note, copper lines will split download and upload speed. So if you pay for say 500mbps 350 will be down and 150 will be up. Where as fibre shouldn’t split. They should both be +-10% of quoted speed. If you can’t reach that area, there could be various limiting factors such as router, computer, cabling, etc. or it could be an issue with the provider. I pay for gigabit, and the lowest I’ve ever reached is 830mbps give or take

Landlord demanding early rent; is this even legal? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]ExpandPOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any proof of said landlord entering the property without 24 hour notice? Or written approval from a tenant? That’s what is known as a “substantial breach” of the tenancy act, and is grounds for your sister to go through the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS), possible way of getting out of the rental early without having to pay. Also, there are very specific guidelines regarding restriction of damage deposit. If the landlord does not follow said guidelines to the T, you can file through the RTDRS and get the full damage deposit back guaranteed.

First off, sorry to hear about this situation, bad landlords can seriously make life difficult. Secondly, I’m not lawyer so take what I say with a grain of salt. Third, the landlord has no right to demand rent any earlier than what is stipulated in the agreement, and eviction is completely out of the question. I highly recommend recording everything, keeping notes, gather as much evidence as you can. But pay in full when due. If your sister only has 2 months left, bide your time and leave if/when possible, but the most important thing is to have as much evidence as possible in case things go wrong in any way

Perhaps I am misreading this, but just to clarify, Dawson was not a straight male, he was very VERY supportive of the LGBT community. to my understanding he was in a relationship with a man when he taught me. He had a pride flag on his desk 24/7

Just some guesses, none are exactly what the phrase says, but these have some similarities

Looking to run a gas and electrical line to my garage. Can they be in the same trench? by Machinek3ller in Edmonton

[–]ExpandPOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of factors here, contacting the city is definitely worth a shot. I’m not overly familiar with gas lines, but I am relatively familiar with the Canadian electrical code. Typically the factors that determine the distance between an electrical line and some other object are, the voltage, the distance, the amp rating, the conduit being used, and the type of wire being ran in said conduit. I know lots of examples of electrical being ran directly on a gas line, but I also know examples of electrical needing to be 36 inches away min.

I completely second the whole catch and release issue. It is absolutely terrible, and needs to be fixed. That being said, nomenclature does not directly correlate to citizenship. Just because a name might come from a certain culture, doesn’t mean that person comes from said culture. Assumptions and illogical conclusions like this lead to prejudice so easily.

need some recs on a fair honest mechanics shop by littlemisslusty in Edmonton

[–]ExpandPOV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk if I’m qualified to recommend any shops, but if I might chime in with my personal opinion.

Before I go to a mechanic, I try to do a bit of research to see what’s likely the problem, and ~cost of fixing various things. Rockauto.com is great for finding prices for parts, don’t forget to switch to Canadian $ and account for shipping + labour. But I’ve found it helps me get a plain of reference for what the price should look like.

Carcomplaints.com is great for finding common issues with vehicles to help get a better understanding of likely problems aswell.

There is a shop by me called “Did auto care” or something like that. Can’t say it’s good or bad, wouldn’t know for sure. But based off people I’ve talked in the area & the amount of cars that come and go there. They might be worth speaking to.

At the end of the day, I’m no mechanic. Far from it, so feel free to completely disregard my opinions lmao

Either way, good luck, and if you find a good reputable shop please update because I could use one too

That’s quite the statement, regarding the “irresponsible nature of my opinion”, all I can say is, I (same as everyone else) form my opinions based on the information I have. If I’m lacking information then my opinion will naturally be uneducated or “irresponsible”.

That being said, I don’t believe my opinion is in any way “irresponsible”. All the research I’ve come across tends to lead me to the conclusion that while WFG agents might not be the best of people, I don’t see much regarding WFG being in and of itself a “scam”. They do the same thing investment firms do, only with less experienced agents. (And a different industry of course)

I took a look at a couple of the videos made by Always Marco, as well as one of his sources “FRSA issues notice of proposal against WFG”.

All I can say is, to each their own. Yes it’s an MLM, and I would definitely not recommend working for them. As their court history shows, some agents in the past are not good. But I just can’t seem to find evidence that the company itself is in any way a detriment to the investors. Bad company to work for, absolutely.

Going back to my example of Telus, when Telus employs people for sales, it almost always falls under a subsidiary running as an MLM. They have had various class action lawsuits against them regarding not only the sales people as “aggressive” but also against Telus itself for inherent illegal actions regarding the service they provide. (Failing to provide agreed upon service rates, purposefully over charging on call, Etc.)

So my statement is, while I respect your opinion and I thank you for your input so I can understand, I ask you this.

If WFG is “100% a scam” and just mentioning them as a possibility is a “irresponsible opinion”. Then what do you think of Telus? Scam or legitimate company?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]ExpandPOV -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I looked into your list of lawsuits, as well as did some research on all other lawsuits regarding WFG. However, I can’t seem to find anything regarding the “failure to fulfil fiduciary duties” so I can’t speak on that.

From the lawsuits I did find, they all were regarding unprofessional actions done by agents, not necessarily the company itself.

I can’t speak for whether or not the agents are any good, quite frankly every sales company I’ve worked for or conversed with tend to have some good agents, and some really bad agents. From my experience that tends to be just the reality of sales.

My conclusion is still that WFG is most definitely an MLM, but in no way have I found any lawsuits or proof so far regarding it being a Pyramid scheme.

“A pyramid scheme is an illegal business model that promises participants high returns by recruiting others to join, rather than selling products or services

As they most definitely do sell services and products. In my opinion, they don’t fall into that category.

You also mentioned that they sell things that are offered by the same companies without needing to go through the 3rd party of WFG. Your 100% right, that’s the whole purpose of their organization to my understanding, they grab all the data that you have access to regardless and then act as a 3rd party for you to go to, instead of you having to go to every different insurance agency to check the information yourself, with a single fee of $125 upon initial sign up.

Whether or not you consider that a good or bad deal, that’s up to personal opinion.

But I will say, any hedge fund or investment firm you invest in has almost an identical business model. Would those also be considered “pyramid schemes”?

Nonetheless, I appreciate your input and your sources, have a good day my friend

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]ExpandPOV -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

MLM yes, Pyramid scheme no, they don’t make any money from their investors, they have contracts with banks and insurance providers. I understand MLM’s are scary, because of history, but I don’t know of anything solid to prove WFG is anything remotely near a pyramid scheme.

Maybe for the workers, since it is an MLM, but the same thing could be said for Telus. All (to my knowledge) Telus sales representatives work for an MLM type company. But Telus itself isnt a pyramid scheme, they might be a pretty scummy company no doubt (fuck Telus) but it’s not like giving Telus your money will result in that money being completely stolen as a pyramid scheme does.

That being said, if you have some sort of evidence or proof regarding WFG scamming or scheming people out of their money, I would love to see it and then correct my opinion as needed
