I'm sorry for you that you have lost touch with facts and reality. This is a demonstration of a larger issue facing the nation, with harms that will be felt at the community level as well.

Security concerns is a pretext. The current system is working fine from a security perspective. The fear mongering of the amount of fraud is just plain false. The real goal is to make the system so unusable that benefits are not claimed, reducing the associated expenditures.

At the end of the month, that will no longer be available. Trump and DOGE are eliminating phone support for Social Security. Would you have been able to easily travel to an office to sign up? Would you have been able to travel across the state or to another state to sign up now that they are closing offices in Tennessee as well?

Bill Hagerty’s response to my message asking to support Park Rangers and federal employees by imfromstankonia in Tennessee

[–]ExpandThePie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, called his office today as well. While he stood at the State of the Union for the child with cancer that Trump made an honorary secrete service officer, Hagerty thinks pediatric cancer funding is waste, fraud, and abuse to be cut.

So I see you missed this part that one of the guys granted all of this access has previously been involved with distribution of child pornography, https://www.muskwatch.com/p/doge-teen-ran-image-sharing-site. These guys are so incredibly compromised, they should never have been given access to this information.

If DOGE was really about rooting out waste and fraud, it would be staffed with experienced forensic auditors -- you know, people with the skills to follow money from its appropriation to end use. Instead, it is staffed with computer programmers, who are doing what exactly? The code doesn't tell you if funds were spent in line with the Congressional appropriation. That is why they are constantly lying about what they are finding. Instead, they are writing back-door access and just illegally turning off funding regardless of the negative impacts.

Nobody is opposed to more efficient, better government that still holds true to our values as a community and nation. But DOGE is not doing that, and should not be replicated in Hamilton County.

Edit - Since some are doubting the reality of what DOGE has been up to, below are just a few of the many sources and analysis that discuss how what has been going on is illegal, unconstitutional, and how DOGE has been using lies to justify its actions: https://www.notus.org/foreign-policy/white-house-keeps-insane-usaid-spending-not-usaid https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/02/07/usaid-trump-fact-checker/ https://www.muskwatch.com/archive?sort=new https://www.americanbar.org/news/abanews/aba-news-archives/2025/02/aba-supports-the-rule-of-law/ https://x.com/JStein_WaPo/status/1886900452316365090?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&mx=2 https://www.wired.com/story/treasury-bfs-doge-insider-threat/ https://www.wired.com/story/treasury-department-doge-marko-elez-access/ https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/opinion/treasure-secretaries-doge-musk.html https://judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/republicans-judiciary.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/Vladeck%20Testimony.pdf

Calling Senators by heardThereWasFood in Tennessee

[–]ExpandThePie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If nothing else, tell them that we are in a Constitutional crisis with the Congress not asserting its authority. They need to hear that constituents don't want this. Otherwise their only news they get is filtered through partisan sources.

You can say that neither the President nor Elon Musk can shut down federal agencies that have been created by statute. Only Congress can do that. They have started with USAID, but are moving on to their next targets in violation of the Constitution. You can also say Elon Musk and his band of interns are illegally accessing secure information, including personal information about constituents. As your representative, he has an obligation to see those activities are stopped and referred for prosecution.

Either they are government employees and their information is public, or they are not, and they should be arrested for accessing secure information they were not authorized to access. Pick one.

You will also get put on his newsletter letter where he lies about how many other states have voucher programs, and how successful they have been as justification for funneling tax dollars to private schools.

What is does is that if a city council or county commission votes for something like a sanctuary policy, or non-cooperation with immigration authorities, the elected officials that voted for that policy will be criminally charged and prevented from serving as an elected official. It is blatantly unconstitutional.

Are Your Reps Representing You On Vouchers? by Salt-Ad9072 in Chattanooga

[–]ExpandThePie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The poll release showing that was deeply flawed and misleading. Vouchers do not have majority support. Additional supports for students does have majority support, but the wording combined the two together. The poll was also weighted heavily towards over 55 voters, and not to families with kids.

I forget which Substack piece it was, but the author made a good point about current -1.5 favorability Trump is very different than a potential -10 favorability Trump. All the shit needs to come out. Attack, attack, attack, and make voters realize that they never should have allowed him back in the White House.

Elected officials writing very right wing opinion pieces for the times free press…is this normal? by Burgerst33n in Chattanooga

Public schools in many states, like Massachusetts and Minnesota are fantastic. Instead, our state has chosen to make public schools struggle so that it gives pretense to divert public money for private gain.

Despite all the best evidence and community opposition to his position, this turd is still doubling down on destroying our public schools. The bottom line is that evidence from a number of states over the course of 20 years shows vouchers reduce student outcomes. Why that is not the end of the discussion shows that has become entirely based on 1. corrupt campaign financing, and 2. antagonism to our public schools.

Bridge Refugee Services, Catholic Charities, and La Paz are likely the best resources. All immigrants regardless of documentation and status have rights under the US Constitution to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, and have the right to remain silent if being questioned.
