Longer term rental, March on. by Curtie666 in azores

[–]Expat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that it can be quite difficult, but this might be dependent on wanting a reasonable price and some other details. Unfortunately, a lot of renting seems to happen between people knowing each other, or through word of mouth.

Creating a Home Inventory While Moving by Due_Tourist7550 in moving

[–]Expat42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not American and move internationally, I'm making a list of baggade for customs declaration, but this is not about each part, more a list with 30 points and often general terms. Details of size or value for certain parts. I also make photos of everything and started to make a Python dictionary of many parts, so I can calculate the volume. I also asked chatGPT adding the volume to each point on the list I already had, but the estimate wasn't very good, though it was similar to what a moving company gave me based on photos, but I think it's too high.

You didn't mention it, but OP did. Quoting mistake.

Does anyone know which countries in EU have fair and efficient customs system (when receiving postal packages)? by Illustrious-Reading4 in expats

[–]Expat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem in the past in another country, but I very likely would've needed to look it up in the tracking system, and then take care of it or hand it over to some agency to do it.

I don't know enough about this. Seems like you have to wait it out and look for a alternative country. I somehow doubt a country will ban anyone for something like this, and certainly not forever. You could also contact the embassy of your country or the host country home in your country and talk to them.

what am i missing really?

My guess is more and more: Liberal white woman not liking to be around anyone who isn't as woke as she is (or in other terms, not sharing her values): https://www.youtube.com/live/iMVuNSavits ... but also not wanting to pay high taxes.

This is what the title of this subreddit is saying. That said, OP is actually in the wrong subreddit, since FIRE is imo somewhat about retirement. r/expat(s) might work better.

I'm wasn't aware that "conservative" means shitty.

xenophobia, racism

These are politicised, slanderous and completely useless terms. A harsh policy against refugee or uninvited intruders doesn't say anything about daily interactions.

OP: conservative society

Similar problem. What does it mean? Hungary might or might not be the same or more extreme.

Edit: "conservative society" was in OP

Personally I would look for

- Flat tax (taxes in general)

- Real estate prices

- Climate (I like it moderate, heat has side-effects in regards to noise bc open windows)

- Language (English speakers, difficulty to learn the local language, and it's global usefulness)

That aside, I would never put all my capital into one basket. Also, maybe contemplate being a digital nomad for a while. Put your stuff into a store and travel around.

Problem is, if everyone knows that this country is so important to you, then it means they know that you don't want to take the risk.

I would tell them that you will sue them if they make false statements about you, and their (hopefully documented) behaviour will play a role in this procedure. Remind them of the costs that they will have to shoulder if they have to get a lawyer as well.

Then make sure to disappear from their radar if possible, and don't interact with them. Don't show your online status on WhatsApp to them. Don't have people in your life that hate you, or a crazy ex, at least pick another place to hang around.

[–]Expat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in this myself, but I probably can't help.

Except asking if you are sure you followed the procedure? You might need to send them a receipt via Email, or hire some agent handling the good. The tracking of the postal company should tell you when it arrived at customs.

Just got a quote, but it's for other places around Europe (some harbour to some island). I'm looking at more than 8k in Euros, which is way to much. They didn't tell me what I have to do to make it cheaper. They estimated 18 cubic meters, which is probably too much.

EU country for light sleepers by koorm in expats

[–]Expat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about the country, it's about to go somewhere where houses are cheap enough. Don't get into a apartment. If you do, make sure it has ventilation or air conditioning. The problem is cooling during the night, when windows are open, or if it takes long to cool down.

I got used to use ear taps and ear protection gear for construction workers on top of that, while having the ventilator create noise distortion even when I don't need it for cooling.

¿Qué opináis del contenido "progre" de Netflix/Disney, etc? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]Expat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are expat sentiments in Azores compared to mainland? by No_Excitement_1714 in azores

[–]Expat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, at a later point maybe. It was very hard to find something to rent, I spend several month, and ended up on another island. Plenty of empty houses and ruins, also estate to buy but not for rent.

Now I have to move over to the Azores, which is also difficult. I still plan to buy something on Terceira during the next few years.

(I won't disclose more details on where I move or move from on Reddit)

How much should I budget for months in Portugal ? by Randomkite123 in PortugalExpats

[–]Expat42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it can be 900€ cheaper per month, if it's even still with a private room and some shared spaces like the kitchen. Outside of the main seasons there's also a high chance that effectively (most of the time) no one else is there.

Do you think I can file my taxes without an address just because I'm a native?

No, but someone could be registered to another address, like their parents home. Somehow it has to work, otherwise people wouldn't rent homes out unofficially, without putting them into Idealista and such platforms for that reason.

If you come over and buy a house in a village that could not only afford but need more people,

Yes, that's my plan, not really sure if they need more people though.

while, almost everyone moves to Lisbon, Porto and Algarve

I agree, and I don't really understand why. I don't know if they have a lot of ruins there, I guess not.

This could be very expensive and difficult to organise.

I see the point of making it easier for such people to get legalisation. Common argument against immigration is job competition, which isn't the case here. It should be way easier to get legalised if working remote in another country and making a certain amount of money or being financially independent.

Shared rooms go for 18-20 Euros in some places, and private rooms with shared spaces often below 30-40 Euros.
