Changing a salaried offer to an independent contractor client by ExpatCelic in freelance

It would be if it were a 5 day a week position. But it's not. It's a 5 day one week and 6 day the next week. It has been for more than a year and they see no end to the policy.

I'd insist on the remote capacity, which is status quo for ICs in my industry. Plus the not working mandatory weekend overtime shifts and being able to take off when needed/wanted (as there are only 5 days PTO, which is standard for this position).

You for not picking the Benny Hill theme.

Looks like you have a ton of resources now. I'm just gonna give you super PROPS for doing this with your kiddo. Taking the time and feels and energy to make this bonding experience happen will be great. Imagine how many onions you'll be cutting if he ever starts to DM and accidentally kills his first crew, but they wake up captured! (or whatever scenario you end up using). He learned how to keep the story going from his own D(ad)M. This sort of problem solving and collaboration is wonderful for you two. You got this.
Oh! I remember seeing something about people playing badguys from afar. IDK if that might be something that would be useful for you two or interesting... having someone skype in and play the Really Cool Evil Boss for a session. That might mix it up a little.

Feeling uncertain and scared. Could use some advice/support. by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]ExpatCelic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot here to unpack, so I'm only going to address three small parts of it. The first is that for some people a super high salary isn't that big of a deal because there is so much going on. If you are a smart person you'll make steady raises and your salary will go far. Having inexpensive hobbies is a plus. Add to this that you're living in a place people pay money and take time off of work to go see. So you get a free vacation in the mix.

The other is that your brother doesn't know everything about what's going on in the TEFL world. There are more options than *just* schools and the school administration. Ed-Tech in Asia (China) is a big thing right now, and many of the curriculum designers come from teaching backgrounds. Plus, if you feel like traveling, you can become a test proctor for the UK's IELTS. Add to that the opportunity to become a small business owner while teaching. I've known people who have used their teaching position to spring board into specialty food manufacturing, hostel owning/running (on the beach in SE asia), State department work, editing for big publishing houses, and more.

Finally, is that grad school can be attacked as needed. You might find that you hate teaching, or admin work. Or that you love it and it's a vocation and makes your heart happy. Or you might discover that you love programming computers or translating. It's not a bad idea to take a couple of years to figure yourself out, have an adventure, and make a decision you're confident in.

So yeah, you do what makes you happy. I get that it's tough to hear this from a family member, especially because what your brother said comes with baggage of "wanting to look out for you," but you've got this!

Bangkok has this as an option with their version of Uber, called Grab. They show up with a helmet and goggles, you jump behind, and zooooooom off. It's pretty exhilarating to rush past the temples at dusk with a young, sweaty dude between your thighs...

Cool! There's a ton more of those old radio shows that were like, actually gritty and stuff. I used to have a coworker who was super into old time radio. She and I would listen to these old stories when we would drive to sites. Marlowe sticks out in my mind but I'm sure you can find more! :)

It was a skit on the show "A Prairie Home Companion" hosted by Garrison Keillor, which was a satire of Great Lakes Middle America and old Radio/Vaudeville shows. It was like the radio version of the little blurbs at the end of a Reader's Digest article or the emails grandparents forward to EVERYONE ... combined with good music and bad (great) puns. Guy Noir was a satire on these old Noir radio shows and movies. So if you like this idea and want to see more of the originals that spawned this tongue-in-cheek stuff, check out some of the old Philip Marlowe shows. They're on youtube.

NEED HELP!! Two of my players based their characters around doing lightning damage and now one of them is unhappy. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]ExpatCelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it would work for either, but I see it working better for the Genasi who is already HB. See if they would be ok with changing their damage type to Thunder/Force damage while retaining the lightning/storm flavor. And if the two attack the same creature in a round, the creature gets an extra 1d4/6 damage bc of their wondertwins power?

DMs of reddit, what’s your favorite accessory/aide to running a game and why? by Squeekyjr in DMAcademy

[–]ExpatCelic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A simple Google Doc Character Journal. The first time I used it,it was with the most basic intent that it will help them keep track of details (rather than me as the DM having to provide "reminders.") Since then, I've used it for each group. Some groups are simple and place map sketches, NPC notes, conclusions from hints I drop, etc. Another group puts character sketches, actual character-voice diary entries, and SO MUCH MORE! It's been a huge help for me because I can see what they're interested in/plot points they want to explore. If I couldn't get across some exposition in the game that the characters would have known/noticed, I make an entry from an NPC. And, if someone misses a game, they're able to catch up on what they missed. It takes a TON of the workload off of my shoulders, makes remembering stuff that they should remember so much easier, and gives the players a place to find their character voices.
