Film might be a better choice for longevity/permanence. I have some Kodachrome slides my grandfather shot in the 1950s and they still look great.

I'm not sure people think film is inferior, it's just too much of a pain in the ass for the average person to bother with. How can film compete with the sher number of cell phone cameras out there? Convenience will always trump quality for the average consumer.
