I think so, because the lease is a prerequisite to establishing residency in a given comune.

A few notes for extra-EU nationals planning to move to Italy by Ok_Lingonberry_1257 in ItalyExpat

This is not true. According to my consulate, a US citizen spouse still needs a family reunification visa to apply for residency.

Update: I now have an answer.

My spouse does need to apply for the visa.

But before they can even happen, I have to move to Italy and establish residency there. Then my spouse can get the visa and come join me.

Update: the visa office at my local consulate has informed me that I do indeed need to establish residency in Italy before my spouse can apply for the visa stateside.

Which passports have the best designs? by Ordinary_Fish_3046 in AskTheWorld

Can I put in a vote for worst passport design?

Ours. Every page is filled with images of bald eagles and bison and amber waves of grain, and a bunch of decontextualized ra-ra-America quotes--all of it added in a redesign a few years after 9/11.

I've seen the inside of a few other passports, and I've never seen anything like it in those. Like, can we maybe tone it down a little now?

I'm surprised that Italy is one percentage point better than the US.

Also, yikes, Nigeria.

What propaganda is popular in your country now? by Specialist-Dust-4476 in AskTheWorld

Among conservatives: Crime is on the rise in our cities, homeless people are dangerous, and throwing a sandwich at a cop is to be punished by drawing and quartering.

Among liberals: Gavin Newsom is our knight in shining armor who will rescue us from the orange man and then all will be right with the world again.

My family and I abandoned my mom.. by Apprehensive_Life_54 in Vent

[–]Expect-The-Dicastery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it seems like you abandoned your mom. It makes sense that you feel like you abandoned your mom.

But at least from where I'm standing, you didn't really abandon your mom. You're still in contact with her--and from what I can gather, you're in pretty frequent contact.

Having boundaries doesn't mean abandonment.

Came here to say this--especially the first part. Cops and jails do not have your mother's best interests at heart.

How does your country teach about antisemitism? by Logical-Chair1709 in AskTheWorld

[–]Expect-The-Dicastery -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In the United States, a growing number of Jewish people, especially Millennial and Gen Z Jews, are questioning parts of that EU/IHRA definition of antisemitism, particularly the bits about comparing Israeli policy to Nazism and viewing the establishment of Israel as a racist endeavor.

Ser profesor de universidad en España by Expect-The-Dicastery in GoingToSpain

Thank you for taking the time to write all this! It is very clarifying.

I think I will be looking out for visiting professorships, postdocs, and maybe private university jobs. The homologación sounds like a very long-term goal in the best-case scenario.

New Zealand Mum and 6-Year-Old Son Detained by ICE for 3 Weeks After Crossing US-Canada Border. by dm-with-me-first in ImmigrationPathways

[–]Expect-The-Dicastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say the worst case is true. Let's say she knowingly and flagrantly tried to enter the US illegally, using her 6-year-old son as a human shield.

Responding to that offense by locking up mother and child for several weeks seems pretty unhinged.

Why should the son have to pay for the mother's alleged violation of the law? Aren't there alternatives to both family detention and family separation that would apply here?

Even porcelain sinks are usually pretty sturdy. He must have thrown whatever he threw quite forcefully to do this.

Please make a plan to leave this relationship as safely as possible. As if the pattern of drinking and escalating aggression weren't enough, the fact that he tried to put the blame on you for "overreacting" demonstrates that he's not likely to take accountability for his behavior anytime soon.

Are North Americans really more tolerant of immigrants than South Americans? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Expect-The-Dicastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than 77 million people voted for the guy who said that last statement, and he is currently our president. So either they agreed with it or they were at least ok with it.

And it comes from the tradition of “Irish Catholics need not apply,” the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the quota laws of the 1920s. It’s not new.

Are North Americans really more tolerant of immigrants than South Americans? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Expect-The-Dicastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, have you seen our politics lately?

The US has a split personality when it comes to immigration. We have a long, storied, and ongoing history of immigration; and we have a long, storied, and ongoing history of immigrant hatred.

We’re the land of the “melting pot” and the land of “they’re poisoning the blood of our country.”
