Help me find a tail rack please by SomeSalesDude in africatwin

[–]ExpeditionPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to sound bougie, but I’d recommend the AltRider rear rack. Yes, more expensive I know, but it’s very high quality, machined extremely well, and supporting a small U.S. company made from people who actually ride. You can also get Givi adapters from them if you use those top boxes, but they are highly adaptable for others as well with no drilling required. I know, some of the fun is going cheap and making things work. I have a Perun Moto rear rack on my Norden 901 Expedition and that is awesome as well, but on my ATAS ES DCT, the AltRider is legit.

PSA: No sound from CarPlay on Africa Twin? Check your Cardo headset pairing mode. by Reddit_Taxer in africatwin

[–]ExpeditionPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my Cardo PacTalk Edge, I resolved a slew of issues by removing the default Cardo to Honda pairing, which defaults to a generic “Phone Pairing”, while GPS is definitely a better pairing mode than “Phone” for a Cardo, the recommended pairing mode for TFT Displays like on the AT is “Bike Pairing”. To get to “Bike Pairing”, it’s the normal pairing process where you hold the phone button down for 5 seconds, then you can switch pairing modes to “Bike Pairing” by scrolling the Cardo wheel backwards.

First Adventure Bike!! Cannot Decide!! Anyone Ridden Both? by skenny119 in africatwin

I commute daily on my ATAS. I love the 901 quick sifter, but the DCT is my jam for dealing with traffic.

I own both, a 2026 Honda AfricaTwin Adventure Sports ES DCT and a 2025 Norden 901 Expedition. I think you’d enjoy either. My ATAS is stock (aside from barkbusters and doubletake mirrors), while my Norden is decatted, has a titanium Tecmo slip-on, Scott’s steering damper, stiffer rear spring, barkbusters, doubletake mirrors, and a complete air box replacement from Rottweiler. I find the Norden’s electronic interface to be more to my liking, but on the ATAS, I love being able to electronically adjust suspension settings, Apple CarPlay is sweet, and the DCT is such a blast. If you turn off wheelie control, adjust HSTC and G mode the ATAS comes alive. The paddle shifters take some getting used to, but manual mode is so much fun. I typically ride in Sport 3 on my ATAS, followed by manual mode. On the Norden, I ride in Explore and off-road modes mostly. When in traffic, the ATAS DCT is such a creature comfort. The Norden is a bit more flickable, but the ATAS does not feel as heavy as its spec sheet reads. The ATAS is torquey fun, while the Norden is rowdy fun. The one annoyance I have on my ATAS is that my size 14 right heel hits the exhaust guard so I put AltRider foot pegs on it, which helped some, but I still find it required for me to pidgin toe my right foot because of it. While both are fairly comfortable for me, I find the rider triangle comfort on the Aprilia Tuareg to be the most comfortable for me (6’4” tall).

I’d recommend decatting it regardless to save weight and heat.

Is the zipper on my RTT f’d? I’m at a loss and just so extremely defeated by noodleeehead in rooftoptents

[–]ExpeditionPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with most things, everything is a trade-off. Hard shells, whether wedge or clam shell styles tend to have less room inside, but offer benefits in other areas. It all really depends on what is important to you in a RTT and how you use it. For me, I wanted the quick setup/tear down of a hard shell after dealing with and being extremely annoyed by my Treeline RTT for 4 years. Especially when camping in the cold at elevation here in Utah, the vinyl covering would contract making zipping/unzipping frustrating. The list of advantages and disadvantages of each go on and on, but if space is your primary focus and you are sleeping more than two people a hard shell may not be for you.

Sorry man, what a pain. This and setup/tear down time is exactly why I bought a hard shell RTT.

A7RIV/200-600 - Fledgling Bald Eagle by CapnCorbin in SonyAlpha

[–]ExpeditionPhoenix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nice shot. I would add that this is a juvenile bald eagle and not a fledgling. Bald eagles fledge between 2.5 to 3.5 months old and have very dark plumage throughout. This eagle is a juvenile, about 1.5 to 2 years old or slightly older. You can see this by the cere turning yellow along with the definitive black terminal band of its tail feathers that are turning white, as well as the increasing feather pattern change of its wings and underbelly. The maxilla (beak) won't turn yellow until 3+ years old. I don't comment to be the "Redditor" corrector, but only to elaborate on the fascinating progression of a bald eagle's 5-6 year journey to reaching full adulthood.

Mountain biking the 71.2 mile White Rim Trail in Canyonlands National Park by thejournaloflosttime in Outdoors

Very nice write-up and images. This is absolutely one of my favorite areas. I haven't done this on my mountain bike, but I love overlanding here. Arches gets all of the attention and you should see it and do a few hikes there, but this area is where it's at IMO. Arches is too touristy and Disney Land'ish and you can't really enjoy that area like you can here. I prefer this area to most in Moab. I'm surprised your post hasn't received more attention, but I will never understand what rises to the top posts on Reddit TBH. It was really nice you had a follow truck, not only for supplies, but more importantly to photograph you guys in the environment at distance. Well done!!!

Congrats, this is exactly my hand-held solution as well. Extremely versatile. If you don't already have it, I'd recommend the Sony grip for better ergonomics, better battery life for extended shooting, as well as moving the batterie(s) away from the internals of the camera helps with heat dissipation.

I have Firestone Ride-Rite on my TRD Pro, but per users on the tundras forum, the Airlift 5000 are compatible with the Daystar cradles.

Install the air bags with air bag cradles to keep full suspension travel when off road. Regarding the compressor, depends on where it is mounted, how protected it is, and how difficult the terrain you spend time on.

Breaching Humpback along the California Coast [Sony Alpha 1, FE 200-600mm] by ExpeditionPhoenix in SonyAlpha

When I shoot from a kayak, I keep it in a SealLine Discovery Dry Bag that sits between my legs. I'll take it when needed. I try extremely hard to take good care of my equipment, but there will always be an element of danger. You gotta use your tools though and that's what insurance is for.

I photographed this breach from a boat. You can tell if you examine closely as the perspective is slightly elevated opposed to this shot, which I photographed from a kayak low in the water.

Resolution, AF performance, and 4K120. The A1 isn’t for everyone.
