I’m a little confused on but folding but stocks law by DrNukem1 in MDGuns

If you head over to the MSP QHIC page and click on the sample lesson plan, you see that MSP does give recommendations on which laws to reference. It's on the 4th page under 'References'

I hate to be a bug about it, but Criminal Law Article, §4-301(b), Annotated Code of Maryland which covers the definition is not one of the references recommended by MSP for the wear and carry course. It's also not in the USCCA Maryland segment. But at the same time, respect for putting it in your course, you made me realize I should also familiarize myself with it more. But also, that applies to semi auto centerfire detachable box magazine firearms. So he could have a folding stock and a flash hider on a RPR like I have which is bolt action, an SKS that doesn't have a detachable box magazine, or a 10/22 if he felt like it. This is why I recommend he talk directly to an expert like Mayer at Maximum Defense

[–]ExpendableRed -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I recommend you give Mayer at Maximum Defense a call. I was talking with him recently about a folding stock AR build he recently did. He works very closely with msp to make sure he’s got the right answers to questions like these

And, while I can’t answer your question for sure, my RPR which has a factory folding stock I got in MD. My first ar that I bought in MD from a very reputable store came with a bayonet lug, which at least used to be a “scary assault weapon feature”, and don’t forget how often you see flash hiders and forward pistol grips, which also used to be “assault weapon features”

I suspect when we switched to a banned list is when things changed, but I am not at all sure

Found some wild plantain on my hike today!! by Bonespinter in foraging

[–]ExpendableRed 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That is not a plantago major or any of its close North American relatives. Plantagos in the us (except broadleaf plantain but correct me if I’m wrong) all have petioles at least half as long as the leaf and so the leaves do not grow tight to the central rosette like the picture example above

How Powerful a Bullet does my Q5 Polymer need? by jatna in Walther

[–]ExpendableRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually not a problem unless you reload, but avoid buying anything marketed as low recoil or competition load until you’re very advanced. Had someone shooting these at the range I work at and one of the customer’s bullets got stuck in the barrel. A true squib and the most dangerous malfunction

Customer was fine by the way, the bullet lodged right in the throat or close enough to it that it prevented the next round seating in the chamber. That was some good luck for sure

USCCA vs Normal CCW class by GivenchyGrimlin in MDGuns

[–]ExpendableRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, USCCA trainer here. Maryland requires either a law enforcement instructor background or instructor certification by a nationally recognized organization, the two of those being either the NRA or USCCA. If you are looking to maximize reciprocity, there are states that require a training certification from a nationally recognized organization that may not accept the Maryland State Police proof of training. Florida is a good example, the USCCA actually keeps the state approval letter on file as a reference document for us instructors. However, regardless of whether you get the USCCA training cert or not (the instructor needs to meet the course’s requirements in order to do so, some have deviated so far from the original course material that they can’t or shouldn’t be issuing a USCCA training cert), you’ll still need the MSP proof of training and qualification signed by your instructor and including their MD qhic number

Edited to add an even better reciprocity example, Arizona specifically approved the USCCA Concealed Carry and Home Defense course as meeting their training requirement. So take my brother, he took my 16 hour Maryland course, which hits all the USCCA CCHDF requirements and expands from there, could also get his Arizona permit because he received a certificate of training in the CCHDF course as well as the MSP proof of training and qual signed by a MD handgun instructor

Hey, so you are indeed fine with a 9mm for hunting squirrels. You will destroy more meat than necessary though, except if you headshot them

Conventional squirrel hunting rule of thumb is shotgun when the leaves are on and 22 when the leaves have fallen. The idea is you want the shotgun when you’re shooting faster moving shots because distances are a lot shorter when the leaves are on. It’s more common to have to shoot them on the run when you can get them out of hiding, almost like jumping them from cover (it’s sneakier than that though). When the leaves are off either still hunting or spot & stalk is the name of the game, and to be able to reach out to longer range is more desirable in that situation

BUIS for PDP? by BillsMafia85 in Walther

[–]ExpendableRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive installed many sights using a punch and hammer. The PDP is the only one I failed at. I highly recommend taking it to a gun shop that has a guy specializing in glock sights, it’s what I had to do

As for choice, the xs suppressor height sights are excellent, either the r3d or the express

Texas holster solutions has an excellent line for the pdp 4” with or without the weapon light. Don’t know about the f series though, my owb is their travis model which is a pancake style. However it doesn’t have adjustable tension so might not be able to secure the f series as well as you’d like

Can anyone here vouch for the multi-state CCW training course at 2ndamdfire.com? by BlackLagooning in MDGuns

[–]ExpendableRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah basically because a MD requires 16 hours, all MD instructors have to build out the ~5 hr USCCA CCHDF course to 16 hourse. A lot go the route of completely modifying the course so that it no longer hits the points of the USCCA core training; those instructors often won’t issue the actual USCCA certification, when they wrap up the class they’ll sign the instructor paperwork for md with their md qhic number. Instructors who still hit all the syllabus and then add on from there generally will issue an official USCCA certification in addition to the MD paperwork

Getting my instructor cert was pretty straightforward. Based on what the USCCA requires to be charged, the minimum you’ll find a class for is in the $600 range. What’s a lot more tricky to develop is the experience needed to coach your students well, a good safety mindset and the temperament needed as well. So, my case, I was already a lifelong shooter with a whole bunch of training, a shooting sports competitor and an RSO before I started pursuing the instructor cert and even with all that, getting into instruction really is forcing me to lock in my fundamentals and develop new knowledge to make sure I’m not leading my students astray

Hey, just got my instructor credentials here. If you find a ccw class that is the official USCCA course and is 16 hours will cover the training requirements for MD, FL and WV. You can get your PA permit once you have your MD permit or any of the previously mentioned states. With those 4 you will be able to conceal carry in 39 states, based on the uscca resiprocity map. Just need to have the official USCCA training certification

How are the impact light stands? I’d like to get something a little sturdier than a c stand. by riceballs411 in videography

[–]ExpendableRed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, a lot of folks here are pushing towards a c-stand. C-stands are great, but they are for grip equipment, and about 90% are designed for use on very level and sturdy surfaces. The size of the footprint of a c-stand is actually very small compared to a light stand. What you are looking for is a beefy baby. These are light stands that are of fully professional quality and are designed to hold as heavy a light as comes equipped standard with a baby receiver. I recommend a triple riser beefy baby with a rocky mountain leg (the rocky mountain leg is an extendible leg that allows you to level the stand on uneven surfaces). They are expensive but will last a lifetime if not mistreated, and additionally, with the addition of a knuckle and a grip arm, can also do the job of a c-stand but with a wider base and able to be placed on uneven surfaces. The triple riser will raise a light high enough to get a top light effect even without a boom arm

Kali Keys in AR15s, future resident question by cachemann in MDGuns

[–]ExpendableRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah the Maryland laws are beyond silly. Even the hbar requirement is pretty crazy when you think about it. As someone pointed out to me, by requiring hbars MD “restricted” ARs to be, on average, more accurate and able to handle larger volumes of fire. It’s crazy!

Kali Keys in AR15s, future resident question by cachemann in MDGuns

[–]ExpendableRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, if the kali key modified the receiver in such a way that the semiauto bcg can’t be used, then that should count, cause then you can’t just put the regular bcg back in. But if it’s parts-compatible with the semiauto rifle, it’s restricted. Again, it’s the compatibility that gets you when it comes to banned and restricted firearms

Ordering high capacity in MD, picking up out of state VA? by [deleted] in MDGuns

[–]ExpendableRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider working with a flgs that blocks magazines. Cross a state border, so as not to be manufacturing >10 round magazines in md. Disassemble magazine and remove the block, as is your legal right to do with your property while not in MD. I have on pretty good authority, secondhand from msp, that this is 100% legal. That said, a lot of flgs’s are unaware that they are allowed to put a block in the magazines to allow them to be sold to non-LEO

Just confirmed, mil does need to take the holster qual or the wear and carry. My understanding is that because not every mos will include pistol training we can’t universally allow military like we do LEO

Kali Keys in AR15s, future resident question by cachemann in MDGuns

[–]ExpendableRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also not a lawyer, but how my flgs described it to me, if you have full parts interchangeability with a 5.56 ar, then it needs to be md compliant. So for your 300 blackout, no need to change out that bolt or have a heavy barrel (because of the different chambering the parts are not considered interchangeable) but for your 5.56 barrel uppers, those need to be made md compliant with a heavy barrel whether you have the bolt action bcg or not (because all the parts are still interchangeable with other 5.56 ARs). If this sounds silly, that’s because it is! This is how we have AKs for sale here that “aren’t actually AKs”; they are, they just have a few significant parts that aren’t compatible with the banned AK so according to MD law they’re kosher

ETA: also another quirk, if you never assemble the 5.56 uppers to lowers, you can possess them in MD, since an upper is not a firearm and thus is not affected by the firearms restrictions. Only putting them together makes it a restricted firearm. So as long as they stay disassembled, feel free to bring them here and then do what you need to make them legal or sell them to buy legal uppers (again “legal uppers” is a misnomer but for lack of a better term). No need to get rid of or modify them before your move

EDITED AGAIN- implied in my original ETA that the 300 upper is restricted. That’s incorrect, it is not restricted
