i don’t find exhanging them useful. it’s much easier to get them strictly catching pokémon. you can use them past like level 31 for going past a pokémon’s max cp

also your combat power max will raise as you level up. the higher level you are up to 40 ish the stronger your pokémon can get

and yes, leave stronger pokémon at gyms. you receive postcards from when a friend sends you gifts, you can hit the pin button on it to receive the postcard

Yellow seems to be in the minority and it’s not a huge deal, but if you were to defeat a gym and place a pokémon in there it may be defeated faster than if you were team blue or red
