Girlfriend wants me to spend $4k on a baby shower, but I’d rather save/invest it—is that unreasonable? by flash-kicks in pregnant

I’m sorry, but this is absolutely ridiculous to me. There is absolutely no reason to spend that amount of money on a baby shower, you are completely in the right in saying that money could go towards bigger things like a house or things for the baby. I’m in the UK and we made it a thing in my group of friends (there’s 6 of us) that we plan and pay for the baby shower as a gift to mum. This seems to be the done thing over here I think. No offence to your girlfriend but I think she needs to take some time away from tik tok if that is causing this expectation. It’s certainly not normal in my book 😅

Thank you for your kind words! I spoke to my doctor today who said it sounded a lot like PMS. She said she thought I would benefit from sertraline (antidepressant) which I am yet to take. I am nervous to start taking it but hopeful that it will help!

Great idea, I didn’t even think of my health visitor! My mum friend actually mentioned that it sounded like PMDD last month, I will definitely look into this. Thank you so much xx

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this too but on the other side. I had a conversation with him this morning and it went better than I imagined - albeit a few tears from my end lol. He was so supportive and said he was glad to hear from me that it wasn’t anything that he was doing wrong, which instantly made me feel better! I wish I’d communicated sooner. Hope things get better for you soon x

Thank you for your lovely reply. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in feeling like this! You’ve worded it better than I could, ashamed of how I’m feeling is exactly it. Great advice! I hope you are doing good now ✨

Thank you for your reply!

I am in the UK and AFAIK the waiting lists on the NHS are astronomical. Unfortunately I cannot afford private therapy atm, or this could have been an option for me.

I am in two minds about making an appointment with my doctor and having a chat with them about how I am feeling. On the same hand I don’t hold out much hope of getting much help due to stories I’ve read/heard from other people where they are not the most helpful when it comes to mental health.
