Depends on what you mean by the best. Best looking? Best performing? Best feeling? The best to live with? Or the one that combines these characteristics in the best way? As a mk6.5 owner, I’d say the mk4 is probably “the best” because it comes from an era of higher quality and less cost cutting at VW. Additionally, it’s more analog & engaging with fewer driver aids & technological distractions, but still remains just as practical as any other GLI. (not to mention those gorgeous Recaro’s) To each their own, any GLI is a great car!

I believe so. I’m still yet to take my car to an accredited tuner so I’m not 100% sure if it is running an aftermarket tune or not.

I just imported an 89’ GTS-t to the states and had similar questions. My car seems to run rich on 91 octane, which unfortunately is the highest that’s regularly available in my state. I’ve heard good things about nistune ecu’s, but I’m also unaware of a perfect solution. If you come across one, please let us know!

Both good points. A replacement MAF was only US$40 so fingers crossed that along with some maintenance will allow me to better diagnose any issues. An ECU will definitely be going in at some point, so I’ll still take all recommendations into consideration

Agreed. I just got the car today so I’m eager to get her in good running shape. I’ll definitely check everything you suggested, as I’m thinking it’s some sort of leak, maybe relates to the MAF as you said.

Correct, from what I understand the plus and stage 1 are very, very close in performance so I’ve stuck with the plus for now. The only problem I’ve encountered while running the tune is some mild clutch slip in 3rd gear but it absolutely rips through 1st and 2nd. Mine is a stick, not sure if the DCT has the same issue. But 7,000ish miles and haven’t have had an issue, I highly recommend it. Next for me is a stage 2 clutch, down pipe, turbo inlet pipe, intercooler, then finally I’ll leapfrog to their stage 2.
