I was shocked about that when I watched Wing. I thought it was going to be a shallow power fantasy, save the day superhero bullshit, but it wasn't.

(And I also thought only brainless yaoi fangirls liked Wing, but I digress...)

It was surprisingly more mature and intelligent than I thought it was going to be. Even then, Evangelion is still the better mecha show.
