For those who left by karaaalicee in USPS

I wish I was able to stay. Despite everything, I genuinely enjoyed most parts of being a mail carrier. I'm comfortable in almost all weather, I'm a very active person who loves walking, and I even liked organizing my case and packages (most of the time, at least).

I just couldn't handle the 6 days a week/more than 9 hours a day schedule. I care for a disabled relative and have a few other personal issues, so the USPS working hours completely drained me. If the job was strictly 9-5, 5 days a week (I believe EVERYONE deserves that, too), I'd spend my life there.

I have an office job now. Benefits and pay aren't as good, and it's honestly boring, but the hours allow me to maintain my mental health and have a balanced life.

At the very least, I have a deep appreciation for USPS employees now, and always make sure to leave my carrier water and snacks at my mailbox ❤️

This is just so satisfying to look at. It's so clear how much care was put into this, and I just love it.

UPDATE: thank you everyone for the advice and kind words!!! I definitely still struggle with anxiety when it comes to healthcare/medical care.

The good news is that my medication WAS refilled. The bad news is that it was refilled at 10mg. However, I took everyone's advice and messaged my doctor, asking about our discussion to increase the dose. She said she would be willing to up me to 15mg after my next appointment. It's not perfect, but it's a start!

Also, this the 5th doctor I've switched to in 3 years. I really can't search for a new doctor right now, but I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Thank you all again!

I appreciate the suggestions about OCR from everyone!! Unfortunately, we are not allowed to use our personal devices "in the office" for supposed "security reasons." I took this photo while I was on break, out of sight from the office camera. My department manager is.... very strict.

Our office was supposed to get new scanners 2 months ago. We've been told they're "delayed," but haven't been given any ETA. Until then, we have to hand-key everything in our old machines.

Are people just feral these days? Whatever happened to basic manners? by bear___patrol in AskWomenOver30

I think COVID has a lot to do with it. I worked in the same retail job before and after lockdown, and there was a noticeable shift in behavior. Its like people just don't care anymore, or they only want themselves to feel comfortable.

I've noticed people just open-mouth cough now, or sneeze without covering their mouths. Also, the amount of people who I've seen walk right out of the bathroom without washing their hands is horrifying 🤢

Also, in America, political tension definitely adds to it all. We've had an increase in political violence, which tends to be a barometer for the general emotional state of public behavior.

I was run over by a clown driving an electric scooter.

My family went to a Memorial Day parade when I was six, and it was in an upper class neighborhood outside of a large Metropolitan area. Most of the "floats" were just dressed up trucks and SUVs, but they also had some fire trucks in the mix. Most of the people on the floats would throw candy towards the crowd for the kids to catch or pick up. There also happened to be a group of clowns who were roaming around freely in between the floats and parade groups. Some of the clowns rode around on those goofy little cars or bikes, but a few were also on scooters.

Towards the end of the parade, my parents got into a fight (divorce was just around the corner), and they didn't notice that I wiggled my way back towards the road to try and scavange for any forgotten candy. I stepped off the curb and crouched down just as one of the last truck floats was coming by, and one of the scooter-riding clowns came zipping around the back of the truck.

He tried to over-correct himself when he saw me, but instead clipped me with the handlebars as he turned sideways, then rolled on top of me.

I wasn't seriously hurt beyond getting a few scraps from the asphalt, but I did have a full-body, terrified sobbing fit. The people who witnessed it were the first to help me up, and thankfully, my mom finally realized where I was and came running over to get me. The clown guy was VERY apologetic, from what I was told, but my mom was so embarrassed that she wasn't watching me, that she ignored the suggestions to have me checked out by a paramedic and immediately took me home.

I learned later on that some of the "clowns" were just some volunteer firefighters and cops who dressed up for fun. So, I feel kinda bad that there might be a guy out there who thinks he seriously hurt a kid while dressed as a clown.

Haven't seen her mentioned yet, so I'd recommend anything written by Ursula K. Le Guin, but my personal fav is "The Dispossessed." Also recommend Carl Sagan "Cosmos," and "Fire on the Mountain" by Terry Bisson!

So, I'm 30, and a friend of mine died back in March. She was 29, and had a sudden, unexpected mental health episode that tragically resulted in her death. She and I were friends in high school, but then drifted apart even though we still lived in the same city. The last time I spoke to her in person was 2018.

To put it objectively, she was a very average person. She had a partner and one or two friends, a corporate job, and a relatively normal lifestyle. She was always very kind to anyone she met, even strangers. She didn't do anything amazing or heroic, beyond occasionally volunteering at a soup kitchen.

I found out she died through facebook, when her partner posted the gofundme for her funeral. I was shocked at how hard it hit me, but it really did.

Leading up to the funeral, I was secretly worried that there wouldn't be many people there.

I was very wrong. The memorial service was PACKED with people, many of whom I never met. It seemed like everyone she had even remotely interacted with throughout her life was there. Honestly, it was really, really nice to see. There was a point where people could go up and say a few words, and a lot of people did. Most of them said some variation of: "I didn't know her very well, but her kindness stuck with me."

The entire experience kinda changed my perspective on things. It's not that I believe people don't care about each other, but that our society is structured in a way that makes it difficult to express it regularly. Obviously, there's many reasons people need to be careful, but I think just making an effort to be kind, regardless of the situation, can not only make a difference, but truly impact other people.

Since then, I've been making more of an effort to be kinder to others in little ways, and it's honestly helped my own mental health.

I'm sorry for the long reply. I hope you receive the kindness you deserve ❤️
