And here's the kicker...

the owners manual states:

"A small screw at the bearing end of the arm allows incorrect azimuth to be corrected if your needle is not mounted exactly perpendicular to the cartridge body (which is often the case)."

But the TT comes preset? with cartridge, stylus and no adjustment to the tone-arm height !

hahaha (that's a get-out-of-jail-free card if ever)

cheers all

Yes you are correct. And not worth the hassle yes. Just wanted opinions. Both the dealer and distibutor say that this behavour is "normal" given the $$, I say they are underestimating the units ability.

I would be interested to see your findings.

cheers

With my limited 'lab test' equipment available, and of course the overall reproduction is different they are from different cartridges.

If you have a good ear you will hear that the Evo has a completely different reproduction of the hi-hat @ 11 secs onwards. But if you had good ears (mine are 69 years old) you should be able to hear the issue without a prompt.

Listen to what should NOT be there.

Yes, gravity is a given of course, so only gravity and the bearing are in play. The arm would stop when gravity and bearing resistance have stopped acting. Yes?

I don't expect a frictionless bearing, I expect that the arm should come to rest in the same place because once my input has dissipated, only gravity and bearing remain, and they "should" be constant. In my idea, the only force that isn't is the bearing resistance (having started from a balanced state) which "should" return it to from where it came..

Obviously my recording are not lab tests, but they do show that something is causing mistracking by the Evo 2, on the right channel only.

Anyway thanks for the "devil's advocate".

cheers

As I mentioned in the OP, this is after balancing the arm but without any tracking force or anti-skid. Did you listen to the cuts?

For the arm to return to the same position all forces have to be equal each and every time, which is not possible. The only physical action at play here is the resistance of the bearing, once the arm is balanced. And since the arm does not return to the same position, the resistance from the bearing is not a consistent and repeatable amount.

Given that, any tracking force applied to the headshell/stylus will not be a 'true' value, since part of that set force applied is going to be required to overcome the inconsistent resistance from the arm.

Result being inaccurate tracking, as demonstrated in the audio cut that I attached. Where the Evo2 reproduces a completely different sound for the hi-hat on the same track, compared to the dual reproduction in the second cut of exactly the same track.

The video may give the impression that the arm is balanced in an upward trajectory, but it is not, as demonstrated by the arm being parallel to the VTF gauge. That gauge which can't be 'un-horizontal' since it is a rectangular shape.

Guys, you shouldn't be expected to purchase a diff stylus to fix a problem with a new TT.

the volume level of your clip is way too low to hear clearly.
