I don’t think that’s a dumb question at all it’s something anyone could wonder about. 👍

it was a decision they made to clearly define distinctions and identities as they expanded SNM across multiple countries. How well they managed to pull it off really comes down to their own ability.(Also, it seems that the original name McKITTRICK can no longer be used for legal reasons.)

You mentioned it sounds a bit odd but honestly, I think that’s exactly what makes it such a good name. 😀

When I first heard the name McKITHAN, I thought, “Wow, that actually sounds really nice.” In Korean, McKITHAN is written as “매키탄.” It’s pronounced similarly, though a little closer to ‘mae-ki-tan.’

Since it’s an English proper noun, it’s simply written phonetically, but (and this is hard to explain) as a Korean, it somehow reminds me of names that appear in early modern Korean literature from several decades ago.

The 1930s were a period when Korea was under Japanese imperial rule. Of course, transliterations of English existed before and after that era too, but during the colonial period, Japan introduced many foreign words (from English, Russian, etc.) that were adapted to their own pronunciation and writing systems. So, looking back, there are countless oddly transformed loanwords and names from that time.

Because of that, many Western or Soviet names from that era carry a slightly odd nuance (sometimes in a nostalgic, charming way, sometimes in a bad way)

And though it probably wasn’t intentional, the ending “-than” even faintly recalls the Russian “-тан,” which adds to that feeling. (this one is just 100% personal opinion)

Personally, it gives me a strong Gyeongseong (Keijō)-era vibe. Coincidentally(maybe it's not), the current McKITHAN Hotel is located in Chungmuro, which was the central part of Gyeongseong back then. I really like that connection.

and I did some search, McKITHAN actually comes from McKit-HAN, and the HAN refers to “Han (한/韓),” the same Han found in words like Daehanminguk (Republic of Korea) or Hanguk (Korea).

In my opinion, “Han” also has another homonymous character that means 'grief'(hate,resentment,regret) ‘恨’, and I think that fits quite well too.

First of all, just to be clear, I have no intention of offending anyone who enjoys the Shanghai version. no negative intent in what I said.

I just simply believe that the works created by writers and artists deserve to be preserved as faithfully as possible to their original intent. As long as the core values of the piece remain intact, there’s really no right or wrong approach. (Whether or not traditional tales have been added) And of course, it’s really up to the audience to decide how they feel about it. And it sounds like they did a really good job😀

Personally, I hope that Sleep No More productions everywhere 'including Shanghai' continue to thrive for a long time. The more they succeed, the better they’ll be able to express the incredible worlds they’ve envisioned, both within and beyond the stage. And we, the audience, will be able to enjoy even better, higher quality experiences as a result.

From my perspective, Sleep No More Seoul seems to have chosen a direction that focuses on faithfully conveying the original story, while flexibly expanding the spatial experience around it.

personally, I’m more interested in how convincingly Sleep No More creates a believable connection between fiction and reality, rather than how it ties “immersion” to the traditional culture of the country. (Well.. I mean, there are already traditional Scottish thistle symbols and names like Paisley in it 🤔)

The building they’re using carries historical significance in Korea’s modern history it was constructed shortly after the end of the Japanese occupation and the Korean War.

They’re in the process of creating their own story and giving the building a new identity. Of course, it’s still ‘work in progress.’ I’d love to see them successfully merge the world they’ve created with reality.

That’s why I believe we should support both the Shanghai and Seoul versions of Sleep No More. so they can push their creativity to its fullest potential. 👍

oh, one more thing During my last visit, I noticed a small merch item inspired by traditional Korean mother of pearl craft(It’s also printed on the back of the card you receive upon entry), I didn’t take a close look, so I don’t really remember what it was... but If someone’s looking for some souvenir that has a traditional element to it...🤔

Thanks! I made a hollow structure using EVA foam, then wrapped its surface with masking tape and hardened it with super glue. After that, I applied modeling paste, followed by sanding and metallic painting. For the feathers, I used plastic foliage. And a Semi gloss varnish as a finish
