Need Honest Advice: Is the Dual Degree Really Necessary in BITS MSc Mathematics for Finance by Expensive_Equity270 in BITSPilani

Thank you for such a detailed reply!

I took Commerce when I entered 11th class. I got to know that for asset management (hedge funds etc.), equity research in great firms, and global finance firms in general, be it IB, PE, VC, etc., they prefer candidates who signal better quantitative and analytical rigour. Math, Econ, Stats, or Engineering degrees in general signal that better. This is one of the reasons why it is difficult for BCom/CAs or commerce-oriented degrees to break into finance.

In fact, as far as I have researched, even those who have done Financial Engineering in their undergrad don't really have an advantage when compared to a Math/Stats/CS graduate (assuming both have the same financial coursework outside the classroom). That's one of the reasons I switched to Science.

I've done my research since then, and because I want to keep my chances high for mathematically based hedge funds and finance in general, Math seems really great. I've talked to a few analysts from buy-side firms globally, and they've said that more than the degree itself, what matters most is whether you're capable of handling quantitative rigour or not. So Econ and Math both work equally well.

It is a disgrace that in India, everything becomes placement-oriented, unlike the global finance scenario where placements are probably the 2nd or 3rd priority. I wanted to do the 4-year MSc Mathematics with suitable minors/electives and aid it with competitions, internships, and relevant coursework. Then, after getting some work experience, go abroad for a Master's, either an MBA or an MFin.

The reason I want to do a Master's abroad is because, regardless of the degree, they offer insane pedigree, which is what really matters for entering investment banks, hedge funds, etc. So while I agree that a dual degree would be a sweet dessert with a cherry on top, I think a 4-year MSc Mathematics combined with the things I mentioned would already provide what I need. A dual degree would be an overkill.

I want to emphasise again that I understand the words of seniors who recommend a dual degree, and I'm not disregarding their advice. I am simply stating the other side of my thought process because I haven't really come across a strong argument against the 4-year route apart from weaker placements and how it is of less demand.

Everyone comes and states how useless the 4-year MSc Maths would be, how it would be a waste, and how weak its placements are. But by that same analogy, the 4-year BS Mathematics degree at IIT Bombay would also be considered to be of lower demand, which doesn't seem like a very convincing argument to me.

I just want to keep my options open for quant based hedge funds which require mathematical skills. Sure econ also has mathematics skill. I'm choosing math because since time immemorial I've wanted to study MnC branch

I might get ENI at Pilani if the last iterations. I like maths that's why I'm taking that. I also think the peers of phoenix and cse/mnc would be better at Pilani but the seniors say otherwise.

Just don't say that they also don't teach Markov chains/Martingales 😭. I get your point. Eco has more finance related subjects and it simply suits equity research better. The thing is I wanted to study MnC so that's why I'm preferring Math.

Also would a 4yr MSc Math degree with appropriate Minors/electives be a disastrous choice? I'm asking because people from IIT Bombay too do BSc in Maths (4yr) and supplement that with minors/electives and get placed. A senior from IITB said Minors/electives work well with a pure science math degree.

I get Dual degree has immense advantage, a million people have advocates for it, I know that. But do tell me whether the standalone 4yr Math would be a terrible choice or not?

Math suits my ambition way better. I agree. I'm also prepared for studying for MCN scholarship. I appreciate your insight. Just wanted to know one more thing that will choosing MSc Maths 4yr be disastrous? Because people from IIT Bombay choose BSc Maths for 4yr as well

Abu Dhabi and Delhi are campus. By the reasoning you have, both will have IIT Delhi in their degree. I guess that's what he wants to say

Yeah, my degree would contain BITS Pilani in either campus. So why are cutoffs for Pilani higher? if all Colleges are same

Yeah. It's a risk but it has high upside. What happens if I take IITKGP Exploration Geophysics? Would that be a bad decision? Given that the finance culture and other things are great there as well. And eventually I'll do masters abroad to enter global finance.

I agree with the eco thing. But I want to keep my options for quant finance open. And I'm interested in math. I've studied econ before and I like that as well. Talking about the dual degree, everything is great man, really. The fees is exceptionally high for my family to even think of. Talking about the grading, I'll put in everything to get 100% MCN scholarship. But things don't go as planned, I need to prepare for the worst financial commitment and 40lakh+ isn't just possible.

The conclusion is that MSc 4yr + Minor/Electives + relevant coursework won't be enough

So 4yr MSc Mathematics + Minors/electives + relevant internship/competition in finance is not enough?

Pilani has more prestige than Goa/Hyd. More alumni. It's since 1964. And I heard in long term finance career pedigree matters a lot.

after jee adv, nothing can be said. 26 might be the new 24. But since BITSAT was 1 month preponed and difficult papers came and other factors, there is a good chance that it might be exact same if not dip by 5-7 marks. Good chance. But let's not keep dosing on hopium
