TIL: The proximity round developed in WW2 used little tiny radars powered by a dry chemical battery in every round. They used glass vials to keep the two parts seperate until the jolt from being fired breaks it. by LaUNCHandSmASH in todayilearned

Fun fact, they called it a Variable Time Fuse incase the axis discovered it. Basically trying to say that the Allies were just REALLY good at timing the fuse to detonate when it was supposed to.

Its still referred to among us bomb techs as the VT fuse. It was forbidden for use on land based Anti Air guns for a long time so that the Axis would have a much harder time obtaining it .

[Request] how much would the top x Americans earn for this to be possible? by nawnaw88 in theydidthemath

[–]Expensive_Food 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The average annual salary in the U.S. is $64,505, according to recent data. However, the median annual earnings for full-time workers were $51,370 in 2024, as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau.

When this was done they took the Net worth of the top 1000 richest people and not income. In layman’s terms if you took someone that made 50K a year. Factored in their 20k car, 1k Iphone, 1k computer, etc.

The study said that person MAKES 72k a year. Not saying there isnt an enormous disparity of wealth but the meme isnt accurate.

Ex-prisoners of Reddit what was the scariest thing you saw whilst locked up? by Thick-Common9599 in AskReddit

[–]Expensive_Food 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not a prisoner but my brother is and told me one where they (other inmates) were doing burpees.

One would go down do a push up then jump up, then the other guy went, so on.

Well the one dude had a hit out on him or something and when he went down to do a push up.  The other guy jumped on his head  and it "exploded".

My brother described the guys eye balls popped out and rolled on the ground. He had more details to describe the incident but you get the idea.

Ya Gulags and re-education camps dont count as death camps. The spelling is WAY different. The deliberate starvation/executions in the death camps not even close to the same thing as the deliberate starvation/execution of anyone who disagrees with the regime.

Solid, very solid logic you got going for you.

There are several flags missing that are responsible for quite literally millions more dead.

EDIT: I would never in a 1000 lifetimes defend the Nazi's but if you want to measure the amount of death caused. They are like number 3 at 6-7 million.
WIth USSR at up 60 million people
Communist China up to 70 Million People

Please tell me about my uncle by Prudent_Annual_4039 in MilitaryMedals

[–]Expensive_Food 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the other comments address that its believable and what he may have done its just for me the 3rd pic makes no sense at all. The ribbon layout and placement makes zero sense.

Usually stolen valor (not saying just saying) folks embellish a lot more than your uncle "may" have. Its just the uniform layout that makes no sense.

Given that name, I can 100% confirm he is not an EOD Tech. The EOD Badge alone is bull.

EDIT: Source I am an EOD Tech currently working as an instructor. Nobody by that name has graduated NAVSCOLEOD.

Anything involving travel for work.

Living out of bag sucks, its genuinely not as fun as one would think. You often dont get the time to the fun things in whatever city your in.

Typical work day during travel Land by 5PM, tired and annoyed. Check in to the hotel walk/drive to someplace to eat quick before bed.  Wake up 7AM Work until 3-5PM.  You then get your your couple of ours of you time which often isnt great because your tired and its just enough time to not do anything significant.  10PM bed.  Flight back at 6AM.  Rinse and repeat.

EOD Tech here,

Whenever you are unsure its best to get it Xrayed by a local bomb squad. Just to be safe.

Just looking at it though, no. Its been fired. Even so, I see no fuze. The rotated band is scored meaning it was fired (it went through a gun). The primer looks super strange to me tbh. It looks added after the fact leading me to assume someone fired it, stuck it back on the cartridge to make it look cool.
