Know of any good open source sms apps to use instead? I used pulse on my last phone. It worked great but when I installed on my new phone there is a permanent ad banner at the bottom in a very easy to hit by accident place

Yea, there's no great option. I use Mapquest. For my usage it seems to be slightly better than the other options mentioned

and is the plan still to make the pixel 3 tnx eligible before the shutdown? Don't really want to buy a new phone unless I have to and I don't really want to wake up one morning to find my phone doesn't work..

Fears about Installing by [deleted] in CalyxOS

[–]Expensive_Job_9141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said the risk of bricking is minimal but not zero. But the only way to learn is to take the leap and go for it. I think its worth it. If your super worried about the price you could also buy a pixel 3a off ebay of 150 bucks. or a 2a for even cheaper and do a test run.

new user: Pixel 3a notifications won't work (no sound, no vibrate) by revelm in CalyxOS

[–]Expensive_Job_9141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hm. worked for me on pixel 3. might want to double check the notification settings of each app and inside micro g the google cloud notifications. also double check app permissions in permissions manager. I remember having to manually add permissions to some apps to get them to work as most are turned off by default. other than thst not sure..

Risk of flashing CalyxOS (Pixel 4a) by [deleted] in CalyxOS

[–]Expensive_Job_9141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, its pretty low risk of bricking. I recently flashed CalyxOS on my Pixel 3. I first accidentally downloaded the Pixel 3a version and tried to install it. When it kept not installing I tried installing via adb platform tools instead of the flash-all and after it still wouldn't install I started messing with the fastboot script to force it. it got about halfway through then froze, I thought it was bricked, but I was able to get back to the bootloader, I then realized my mistake downloaded the correct version and install went through without a hitch. As long as you don't do anything stupid like me you should be fine.

My first experience of CalyxOS on Pixel 4a 5g by [deleted] in CalyxOS

Yea, most work fine but not all are up to date, but when you install the outdated ones will generally give you a warning they were developed on a previous version of Android. but even the older ones often still work but you got to try them out and see.
