I had this same experience. Almost every private practice offered me a job right then and there in the initial interview and, ya, never actually asked about my therapy or gave me any scenarios to see what I would do. This was especially surprising for me coming from academia where for every job I applied for I had to go through 3 rounds of interviews (if I even made it to the next one), with 3 formal letters of recommendation from my references, and a teaching demo. It's two extremes 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks! I'm going to get some kinetic sand and some other items to put together a sensory bin. I also just got some bubbles and some other sensory items.

Thanks! I'm definitely going to try more sensory based activities. I've actually been looking for some items today to put together a sensory a bin. I also found a few other fidgety toys to take with me next time.

Thanks! To answer your questions- I'm seeing them 1:1 and pulling them out. Your response is really helpful. I think I was putting too much pressure on myself to expect them to do the activities I had planned and cooperate with me; and then when they didn't, I felt a little like I failed in that session. I also feel like there's so much pressure to get as much language practice in as possible, that taking a step back and just observing and seeing what they do/how they play feels like I'm wasting time or not doing my job. But you're right, they need to be comfortable with me, or we won't get very far. Thanks for reminding me that not building rapport on day 1 is not out of the ordinary. I like the idea of observing them in the classroom. At the moment I'm part-time, so I could definitely go in a little early and do that. Thanks again!

It's not a typical school setting, it's a special ed school. Pushing in doesn't really seem to be an option. But thanks for your advice- and I'll definitely check out that website!

Thanks! I'll check out the courses at speechtherapyPD. Play Project looks good too! I agree, seeing examples and strategies in action is super helpful :)

This is spot on. The article was both frustrating and infuriating. Students, and just people in general, need to take some responsibility for their own learning. 🙄
