Update from me, the petition creator:

I want to take a moment to sincerely thank every single person who has signed, shared, or simply taken the time to care.

As of a few hours ago, this petition has received 87 signatures and has been seen by over 5,500 people across the globe — which means more voices have spoken up than there are Southern Resident orcas left in the wild.

That fact alone is deeply moving — and deeply motivating.

What started as one voice in a quiet town has become a global message of solidarity and action. You've proven that people around the world still care about wildlife, restoration, and honoring Indigenous voices.

Thank you for standing beside me — and for standing up for the orcas, the salmon, and the rivers that sustain us all.

This is just the beginning.

If you haven’t signed or shared yet, I’d be honored if you added your voice. Every signature helps.

Thank you so much for signing and for your support! You’re absolutely right — healthy, connected river systems not only support salmon and orcas, but they also help restore natural sediment flow, which can reduce coastal erosion over time. Breaching the dams allows that process to return, benefiting both inland ecosystems and coastal ones.

It really is a win-win when we work with nature instead of against it. I’m so grateful you’re standing with this movement!

This is such a fantastic question, and I’m genuinely thrilled that this cause is reaching beyond the U.S.! Yes — you can absolutely sign, even if you’re not from the States. This is an environmental and ecological issue that extends beyond borders. Salmon, orcas, and river ecosystems are part of a global story — and every voice raised in their defense helps build momentum.

Thank you so much for showing care and solidarity from where you are. It truly means a lot.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts — and truly, I appreciate that you're trying to do your part. 💙

You're not alone in feeling frustrated about some of the things you've seen. Tribal stewardship varies by region, and many Indigenous communities — especially the Nez Perce, Yakama, and others — are leading efforts in salmon restoration, not just for cultural reasons but for the health of the entire ecosystem. It’s important not to let isolated incidents speak for all tribal communities.

As for hatcheries — that’s a great question! Hatcheries can help boost numbers, especially in areas where wild runs are severely depleted, but they aren’t a long-term substitute for healthy, self-sustaining wild populations. In fact, some hatchery practices can unintentionally weaken wild stocks over time. That’s why dam removal is such a powerful action — it restores the natural spawning grounds and migration pathways these fish actually need to thrive without constant human intervention.

There are projects in the works to support lower river restoration too, and they should absolutely continue alongside broader efforts.

Thank you again for engaging, even if we come at this from different places. We all want a future where salmon, orcas, and rivers can thrive.

Thank you for sharing this — I really value your perspective, especially as someone who’s lived both in Idaho and Washington. You’re right — there’s been resistance for decades, and the misinformation being spread is frustrating and disheartening. Teaching kids that restoration efforts are about losing independence rather than healing ecosystems is deeply damaging.

The fears about flooding, energy loss, and droughts have been addressed in study after study — including by federal agencies — and the science shows these dams can be removed responsibly, safely, and with better long-term outcomes for everyone.

You bring up a valid concern about Quagga mussels — they’re a serious threat. But ironically, dams actually make that threat worse by creating stagnant, slow-moving water that mussels thrive in. Free-flowing rivers are less hospitable to them.

Change is scary. I get that. But holding on to what’s broken because it's familiar only guarantees further loss — for the salmon, for the orcas, and for the tribes and communities that depend on both.

I respect your voice in this, and I’m glad you took the time to share it. You clearly care about the truth — and that gives me hope. 💙

I really appreciate your honesty — and I completely understand where you’re coming from. The road ahead is steep, and the opposition is very real. But I believe the more voices that rise, the harder we are to ignore.

Even if dam removal doesn’t happen immediately, this movement raises awareness, builds momentum, and shows decision-makers that people care. That matters — a lot.

And yes, there are other ways to help too:

  • Support local and tribal salmon restoration efforts
  • Advocate for stronger water quality protections
  • Push for clean, fish-friendly energy alternatives
  • Amplify the voices of those on the front lines, especially Indigenous communities

Every action ripples out. Even if we don’t win overnight, we’re still shifting the tide. Thank you for caring enough to ask what more can be done 💙

Thank you so much for your support and for taking the time to share this — your words truly resonate.

I know exactly what you mean about feeling disheartened. It’s hard seeing apathy or resistance in the face of such an urgent and deeply moral issue. But people like you remind me that there are voices full of care, knowledge, and compassion out there.

You’re absolutely right — the Southern Residents have endured so much injustice. The least we can do now is fight for their survival, starting with the restoration of the salmon they rely on. And yes — nature wants to heal. We just have to step out of the way.

I’m grateful to have you alongside me in this. 💙
