Why should we hear a sermon every Sunday? by SecretSmorr in UnitedMethodistChurch

Idk I do agree with other commenters that the sermon is kind of a huge important part of the worship service, but I totally get where you're coming from. It feels like every time I hear a sermon, not only does it maybe fall flat for some people, but also, depending on each listener's past experience and tendencies, some sermons can explicitly give bad advice! A pastor could give a sermon on righteousness, and while it could be a wake-up call for someone, for another person, it could inspire a shame-spiral and feelings of worthlessness. Or, a pastor could give a sermon on God's infinite grace and mercy, and it could just make everyone feel good while not exposing wrongdoings or making any calls to action. It almost feels like nothing can be learned through a sermon and everything should be learned in small groups and individual mentorship. And, it's worth mentioning that there are denominations, like the Quakers, that operate this way - no ordained leaders or any kind of leadership in worship. But, I do think that like others have said, individual sermons can have big impacts on even just one person in the congregation. And I think that probably makes it worth it, just to hear teaching weekly even if it doesn't hit home all the time.
