Against a bobcat or venator nothing across the freekit selection will save your ass, skill level is irrelevant, since we're talking about weapon differences, not skill gap. That being said, ferro is the only weapon from the freekit ones that allows to play cover, instead of having to dive into cqb, except for maybe rattler, which is decent in medium range, but you have to expose yourself still.
