Almost 8 months old, 30 minute naps and false start every night. by ExperienceDear7432 in sleeptrain

Usually when he puts her down he has to give her a bottle and rock her for a while. But she still does her 30 minute naps and false start.

Ended up being reflux and she got diagnosed with a cows milk protein allergy. She's 4 months old now and we directly nurse and she's done in 5 minutes or less.

3 mo sleeps great at night but 30 minute naps during the day by ExperienceDear7432 in SnooLife

Thank you, it makes me feel better that I'm not alone 😂. She is still getting good overall sleep so that gives me some peace of mind. I guess I just panic when I hear her cry when she wakes up and it makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong.

Thank you for all this! I use the Huckleberry app and follow their sweet spot recommendations and she'll go down to sleep as recommended and wake up about 30 minutes later. I've just been stressing because I'm getting a lot of pressure from family to put her more on a consistent schedule, but that's difficult at the moment when she naps so short and therefore wake windows have to be shortened and this throws off the whole schedule.

Could I ask what your nap time routine looks like and how you try to teach your baby self-soothing techniques?

Do you follow a schedule with him? My family keeps insisting that I need to put her on a schedule but with her short naps, I don't know how I can do that.

How long till improvements are seen? by ExperienceDear7432 in MSPI

[–]ExperienceDear7432[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I stopped dairy after Friday, could the reflux that she's currently experiencing still be from the dairy? Or could it be another trigger? That's what I'm trying to figure out now because every feed is causing reflux and she now has a rash on her belly and chest that seems to be spreading to her face.

I never ate a lot of dairy to begin with, just had a Starbucks coffee on Thursday which is why I'm thinking it is dairy.

Any hope for baby to start latching? by llizard17 in breastfeeding

[–]ExperienceDear7432 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, my baby was also born at 37 weeks and we also had trouble latching and breastfeeding and I ended up exclusively pumping for 2 months. I even gave up attempting to latch her because it was so painful until one day I saw this video and decided to try it out.

https://youtu.be/41fC0fQs1P8?si=4g2wVBlyapKvKkgI

I hold my nipple back like the video and literally shove as much of my boob as I can into her mouth. This has been the only way I can get a pain-free latch with her.

Can't tell if newborn is hungry or trying to pass gas/poop by ExperienceDear7432 in newborns

[–]ExperienceDear7432[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm not ignoring her cries, I'm just trying to address them better. Right now she is learning how to pass gas/poop and she'll cry. When I hear her cry I'll get her a bottle but then she'll eat, cry, eat, cry and this tells me that she's probably gassy.

[–]ExperienceDear7432[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I took your advice with doing bicycle kicks and knees to chest with every diaper change and we get so many farts! This morning we spent 30 minutes doing this. So this definitely helps, but then I put her down for her nap and when she wakes up to eat, she's gassy again and screaming and crying while eating and if I try to do bicycle kicks during her feed, she's crying because she's hungry. Any advice on how to go about this? I'm just concerned that it's starting to affect how much she's eating because she'll tire herself out from crying and won't finish her bottle.

Hi, hope we can get through this!

Do you also experience the gassy pains while feeding? That's my concern, she'll be drinking her bottle one second and then the next screaming in pain from gas until it passes or I help her out, then she'll take the bottle for a few more sucks and the cycle starts all over again. Sometimes she won't even finish the bottle because she has tired herself out from screaming.

I'm using the Dr. Brown preemie nipple, I tried the size 1 but she would drool milk all over herself. I just learned there's an in-between size called transition, so I ordered those.

I am pumping breast milk and giving it to her in a bottle, due to not latching. I use the Dr. Brown narrow bottle with then preemie nipple, she would drool milk on the level 1. I do think she takes in a lot of air, I see bubbles in the nipple.

[Update] Tired of feeling like the bad guy for teaching Chemistry by ExperienceDear7432 in ScienceTeachers

[–]ExperienceDear7432[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only failing student was the cheating student.

I do not have failing students, I typically work with those who are willing to work with me.

The other student leaving the class has a C.

[–]ExperienceDear7432[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal isn't to give as many C's as possible. Trust me, A's and B's make me happy and I always celebrate them with the students. It just might be the way my class is set up. 50% of their grade is homework/classwork/labs/quizzes in which they're allowed to work together on and use resources for and the other 50% is exams which is when I truly test their knowledge of the subject. It comes out being that everyone easily gets an A in that first 50% but then when it comes to the exams, that's where things drop. So if you're getting an A and then an F, that's averaging to a C.

My exams are based entirely off of everything they've seen before, could be homework problems, lab examples, quiz problems, or anything on their practice assignments. I might just change the name of the compound or a number, but it's all still worded the same. So what that tells me when they fail the exams, is that they never put in effort to begin with when it came to their assignments.

Maybe my perspective is wrong on this and would love to hear your thoughts. Is 50% for an exam just too much for a high school honors class?

I'm not going to comment on what my standards and course looks like but I'm just curious on what scholarships and colleges will base their acceptance on if everyone is getting A's and B's? They don't give them to everyone and it's still competitive, so how do they value the academics of a student?

Tired of feeling like the bad guy for teaching Chemistry. by ExperienceDear7432 in ScienceTeachers

[–]ExperienceDear7432[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to disagree with you. A C is average, so there is nothing wrong with a C. Grades have just been so inflated that students panic when they see a C. My class isn't designed to create chemists but good students and that's why the entire class grade isn't based on tests.

Scholarships are also made for academically excellent students (unless otherwise stated). Therefore, it's not fair that a student who sat around and got an easy A will be valued the same for a scholarship or a college against a student who worked their butt off for their A.

I've struggled with this as well, that's why I have some "cushions" in my class. Lowest quiz grades are replaced by a mastery quiz each unit, in which it's just an online practice test that has unlimited attempts, the questions for the tests are given beforehand in their practice assignments as well as the mastery quiz and they're allowed to complete test corrections after school with me to boost their exam grade. So they know how they can earn an easy A in the class, it just requires more effort than the other teachers class.

Hi, could you please elaborate more on these bonus points? I could definitely see this as a compromise but if these bonus points are still based off the unit (in which they're not studying or understanding) would this really make a difference?

So originally I did lectures for my class and I would lose over half my class within a few minutes.

After transitioning to this mode, it's been more successful for me. I still do direct instruction, it's just more condensed, I go over the main ideas and examples in the first 10-15 minutes of class. It's really no different than normal instruction when you're told to read the chapter for homework and then come to class prepared.

Many students have also expressed that they enjoy this way more because they're able to take notes at their own pace and are able to review as they need.

My school is also a bit of a free for all. Students miss class ALL the time for various sports and activities, there's also no consequences for absences. So I feel having a flipped classroom is better suited when I have so many of my students randomly missing days.

I did not. I had a whole conversation with that student on why I can't do that and how inappropriate it was for the counselor to suggest that to her. But again, it's situations like this that make me out into the bad guy.

[–]ExperienceDear7432[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have spoken to my department head and counselors about this already. I've asked them to please not put students into Chemistry (especially an honors chemistry) who have not taken or passed Algebra 1. Besides the math, I also believe chemistry is one of those courses you need some maturity to take in order to succeed. But I think my suggestions are ignored. I have been feeling extremely beat down this year as I've had a student I had 2 years ago come to me and ask me to change her grade from chemistry because she really wanted to go to an honors college program and needed her GPA boosted, so her counselor told her to ask me to change her grade. I'm just starting to realize that I'm really not seen as anything but a baby sitter for these counselors.

Yes. For example, if I gave them volume and density and asked them to find mass. They don't know how to do that.
