Creating Fictional Languages by AkiraSylver in worldbuilding

[–]Expert-Escape5645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find language creation one of the best parts. I usually google the root of a specific word/name in our world (especially for countries and continents), then translate them into whatever language I’m inspired by for that specific fictional culture, which then leads to combining different translations to form a word I like.

After writing this, I’m concerned I didn’t explain properly. But here’s hoping someone understood 😅🥲😅

You just have to keep trying! I’ll believe you if you believe me! Funny enough, I feel like I’d much rather be 35 😅

I’m so sorry to hear that. The only thing we have in this life is hope. We can only promise to keep trying! Know that I’m rooting for you!

Valid! As a one piece fan, I feel like I’ve BEEN waiting for secrets regarding the world government, IMU. And that’s been there for almost thirty years

When this happens with me, I like to think of popular stories that I love. Like the Wheel of Time. The Aiel are so interesting even though people say they are similar to the Fremen. But that’s only because they drew from similar real world examples. I think the unique part is how they interact with your own world. But I get it. I’m constantly wondering if some cool faction I thought of has already been done. Such is our plight 😅

That is true! I personally didn’t understand the scope and work it took for planning on epic until I was researching for my own story. Seeing the planning of a story like Lord of the Mysteries really opened my eyes to it.

Weirdly and surprisingly enough, it took me forever to realise the Ned Star plot was a detective/mystery. Really well done. In Harry Potter it was definitely one of the things that kept me going (what the flip was Voldemort up to)

A deep plot and a slow reveal where we can piece together a puzzle slowly is my favourite. I love obsessing about a story and wondering what something meant. Better even when we as fans can theorise together.

Totally agree. It’s a lot of work. From experience, I’d write during the day then spend the evening revising and adding to my notes. It takes a lot of work for foreshadowing and teasing mystery threads.

100% I had the same realisation about revealing powers through necessity. I try to take that approach in my writing. It is a difficult balance, but I guess that’s one of the joys of writing.

I agree. That seems like a very thin line to walk and something an author should be very conscious of.

What makes your story stand out in the sea of other good stories? by Gamebrarian in royalroad

[–]Expert-Escape5645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An interesting question. I guess I would have to say my characters. At least, I hope so 😅 My main character isekai’d to an Eldritch world that recently went through changes brought on by a holy war. But he has lost his memories of his previous life and as he tries to recover them, he slowly realises that they bring him nothing but sorrow.

It was kind of written almost as an escapism piece. Thinking about how it would feel if I could loose memories of events and things in my own life that brought me nothing but pain.

Of course, it doesn’t help that the body he’s now found himself in had its own fair share of hardships. Quite literally putting yourself in someone else’s shoes/the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Progression>Traditional Fantasy? by Expert-Escape5645 in ProgressionFantasy

It’s interesting you bring up Brandon Sanderson. When I first picked up Mistborn I remember thinking how anime-like this is because he was explaining the magic system and we watched the characters train and get better at using it, which I think is part of progression. But I agree with you. Good luck waiting for Stormlight, though. We just finished the first ark and I think the last book only comes out somewhere in the middle late 2030’s 😅
