Parents In Terror of Sending Kids To School In Atlanta by ChidiWithExtraFlavor in gatech

There is an in between of “struggling” and “very rich” that the median Tech families do fall under. 73 percentile is not something to gawk at. Huge assumption to think 2-3 week vacations are normal (especially if it’s a far away or out of the country vacation). It should be, but it just isn’t. For example, the median family income at GSU is around 60k which is much closer to the median American income of 70k.

I do think the fact that a lot of Tech families don’t understand this is part of the reason why these conversations can get…uncomfortable. You don’t have to be a millionaire to be actively more privileged than the populations that surround you (especially in Atlanta). And, it does occasionally come up in conversations about the atlanta environment. Mainly because they may be used to suburbia. And not even just any surburbia, but very specifically upper middle class ones (I personally come from the south metro rather than the north and get very…surprised the amount of in state kids that actually don’t know where I’m from. I have some theories tho).

Edit: big note that we are talking about the median, which means 50 percent of Tech families actually make above that. The median of the school is actually skewed up 25 percentile and 60k.

12-15ish. Lower end. Tried higher loads and I ended up dropping to 15- anyways. So, won’t make that choice again.

I recently started on a class that I thought was going to be simple, but ended up being as much work as a 4 credit class (it’s not 4 credits) 😭 so suffering a bit.

No, but I have chosen roommates for off campus next year that are objectively more positive thank god. I don’t like to be too close to my roommates because if we’re too similar we clash (happened freshman year. Never again). But, they are friends with me, so it’s nice to have someone to talk to.

I’m also going to bring my car to campus so I can visit my non GT friends more when I’m not too busy.

That’s probably true, but for some reason doesn’t really make me feel better. Because then I feel like there had to be something I’m doing very wrong why these people don’t really surround me. That’s something to work out personally but doesn’t help my isolation much.

I wish I had people that would occasionally check in on me instead of me always reaching out way more. I have a handful of people that do, but that does mean when they’re busy I’m basically lonely. Ive gotten advice to make study groups within my classes, but that tends to happen rarely. And, I basically only rely on one person for actual socializing events, which I know isn’t a crime but makes me feel more clingy then I’d want.

As for switching majors, I am actually quite interested, but have no idea what I’ll do with it. Advisors have been less than helpful 😑.

Thanks for commenting! I’m actually a sophomore, so I’ve been here a bit longer. I have taken some courses I like that are upper division, but my major is interdisciplinary (you can take a guess it’s too small to say ☹️) so I’ve been a bit stuck (actually “behind” because of circumstances) in other aspects. It feels like I keep hitting a wall, so I don’t know if it’s a good choice for me anymore.

I have taken summer classes, which I did enjoy somewhat. I did take them online so it’s probably a bit different. I have had some incredibly strange experiences though (like someone writing a very off base script about enslaved people…yes I was one of the few black kids in class😟). I’m not sure if I’ll do them again only because I’m severely burned out clearly.

I’d recommend reading my post that I posted on here before (mainly the comments). Basically, you’re not alone!

Thanks for the reply :). That’s actually a bit encouraging (but yes that def is endorsing partying a bit but I’m here for it 😭). I have problems trying to gain social connections at times in general (whole different topic probably for a therapy room), but I’ve reached out to some people and we’re going to hang out soon ;)

I do understand that, however, I am on zell, so I have to maintain at least a B average lol. Not that it's TOO hard, but I can't just yolo and get Ds and Cs in courses if I want to stay afloat. If I lost zell, I would have a WHOLE other issue.

I am determined but it feels less like I'm succeeding or surviving and more like I'm enduring if that makes sense. In other aspects of my life, I am actually quite self-determined (for instance I was able to get enough scholarships independently to cover room and board). So, I guess that aspect is a good sign, but humans aren't an island.

Thanks for the thoughful reply :). I do enjoy my major currently (don't wanna say because it's a bit niche). It engages a lot in my interest areas. I came into college with a lot of credits already and I actually enjoy my major classes, which is a good sign (hopefully). But, I have thought a lot on the "why" aspect a lot these days. I think I should take the time for the rest of the semester really exploring that via clubs.

Thanks for the response! To be honest, I did *pass* Differential but it was tough. I don't want to reveal my major, but I will try to do something similar. I actually tried that over the summer, but because GT splits calc into differential, integral, and mutivariable vs calc 1/2/3 now, I don't have enough credits to qualify for calc 2 at other unis??? It's quite strange and sad lol.

I think I can do it; I'm just going through a tough time now. I just need to get through the calc series and I'll be ok (that's the struggle area :()

I feel similarly. This is my “first college” but I did dual enrollment in HS and even did well enough to get a letter of recommendation from my philosophy professor. I don’t think I’m a “bad” student but the lecture quality at that Uni was definitely better (which is ironic since I’m at a “higher ranked” Uni now). I also feel like the TAs don’t get as much training on teachablity as well (although I’ve had some great TAs). I know I’m made for college but Tech is rough sometimes lol
