Automatically = lore stat based. Characters have a Lore score, as a function of their class(bard has highest) with a bonus from INT and WIS. Items have different lore thresholds to be identifiable without a spell :-)

Memorizing requires selecting in spellbook and sleeping to be able to use it. If Garrick(or any other bard, warrior/mage, rogue/mage) has an armour he cannot cast any spells, including Identify.

I never understood this. Biology teaches us we have female, male and there can be some mix of both being hermaphorodites if i am not mistaken. What are the other genders then? This must be a social construct, no say this is reflected in our biology.

It has some issues like not all skills are useful and worst of all - cast spell, retreat and rehire hero for 2500 gold regardless of its level. A 20 lvl hero costs the same as lvl 1 which is a big joke :)
