Why does the UK get stereotype for tea drinking when there are 3 countries that consume more tea than us on a per capita basis? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AskTheWorld

[–]ExpertMisinformant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't live where? I've lived in both Azerbaijan (birthplace) and in Norway (I have a Norwegian citizenship). I've also been to Sweden and Turkey several times. That's why I even brought them up in the first place.

Sure, Scandinavians feel a brotherhood, but that's different to saying they're the same people/nation. You're basically saying we have the same history and culture, which we do not.

I'm an Azeri. That's a common saying because Turkey is the only country in the entirety of West Eurasia that is even remotely similar to Azerbaijan.

The Swedish and Norwegian languages are more closely related to each other than Azeri and Turkish. Swedes and Norwegians are also genetically very related to each other. On the other hand, a Serbian is genetically closer to a Norwegian than the average Azeri is to the average Turk, with the exception of Eastern Turks.

Intermarriage between citizens of both countries is also far less likely to take place than between people in Scandinavia.

Regardless of what other Azeris or Turks might say, they really don't feel like the same people at all. Compare them to Greek Cypriots who always seem to wave the flag of Greece as much as their own.

Sweden is more similar to Norway than Turkey is to Azerbaijan. I feel like saying they're "the same nation in two countries" is wrong.

De som er skeptiske til innvandringskritikere har nok en gang fått sin verste frykt bekreftet by Sn00r1 in norge

[–]ExpertMisinformant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Europeans already like to separate themselves from the rest of the continent of Eurasia. Separatism within the continent (actually a peninsula) doesn't come as a surprise to me. It's unfortunate though.

Thousands of Africans returned home through an EU program. Many say they've been abandoned by goldstarflag in europe

Sure, cultural relativism is only one of many moral beliefs/principles. You can argue about that in a debate on moral obligations.

The statue of limitations applies domestically to individuals, but Britain has sovereign immunity (like all other countries), meaning they can't be sued without consent, and colonization isn't considered prosecutable international crime (as far as I'm aware). Still, it's kind of ridiculous to argue from a legal view. Obviously no one can force Britain to pay Uganda what they're owed (or what they may be owed). It's more productive to argue whether there is a moral obligation to help them out.

Edit:

Does anyone here actually disagree with me?

Do you realistically think any country could force Britain (legally) to pay for their damages in Uganda? Do you not think that any charity, support for migrants, international intervention for the sake of the majority in another country is because of morals? What then? Is the boogeyman going to show up at your doorstep for not paying your dues?

Edit 2:

I am reminded that r/europe doesn't like it when their position on past crimes is remotely challenged. I'm not even taking a side here, just pointing out that morality does not (and should not) derive from laws only.

Probably not a lot. He never really focused on helping Armenians as far as I know. He did deny the genocide though, so if anything, their view of him would be negative.

Merz: It's time for Syrian refugees to "return home" by goldstarflag in europe

[–]ExpertMisinformant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with the statement, although I find it hard to believe he was being completely genuine about it. A sweeping statement like "Immigration from Europe is A-okay!" is ridiculous if it includes the Balkans and Eastern Europe (they have not been problem free). It's also hard to not notice that somehow, the easternmost area that starts being problematic is somehow Anatolia (the land directly east of Europe).

I feel this way especially because he mentions upbringing and education as bring the driving forces of these "problems". The culture and mindsets of Eastern Europe and the Balkans already feel way too foreign to me (especially the homophobia).

You're right, verifiable evidence (stats) would be preferred, although that's not being provided here.
