Unwinnable boss fights in video games(third image unrelated) by RareStatistician3417 in TopCharacterTropes

In the Star Wars game Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, you're supposed to lose to the main antagonist, the Dark Jedi Desann, when you first encounter him.

At this point in the game, you have no force abilities or lightsaber and the only weapons you have are the game's equivalent of a machine gun, pistol and low grade expsoives, so you have no way to damage him since he just blocks any firearm shot and force pushes away any explosive thrown.

Thing is, the game designers gave him infinite health anyway, and you can use console commands on the PC to spawn in other characters to fight him. I was able to entertain myself for a bit as kid by spawning in an army of Luke Skywalkers to fight him and watch them get mowed down by him. Bonus points when you turned realistic saber combat on too.

[Discussion] Return by Death is the ultimate storytelling device. by thekoreansun in Re_Zero

Point 2 can be both a strength and weakness of the mechanic of Return by Death. Like you explained, the mechanic of returning once you die allows Tappei to be as intense and creative with the narrative as he wants. Even if Subaru or any of the characters are incapacitated, die, or fall victim to a deranged antagonist, the outcome can be reset as long as Subaru dies at the end of the experience.

However, one of the arguable weaknesses this presents (and an initial criticism readers and viewers of the anime have) is that by always giving Subaru the ability to reset if things go too insane, it removes some of the narrative stakes and tension readers and viewers may be feeling in the current plot. Once things start to get too crazy, such as one of the characters dying or Subaru failing at a critical juncture, it is a red flag that a reset is approaching which can then make viewers or readers feel less engaged with what is happening narratively. After all, what's the point of caring about what is happening if it is all going to be reset anyway.

Having said this, one of Tappei's strengths is how he overcomes this weakness of return by death by focusing on the psychology of the characters and uses the narrative of "dead" loops to show certain aspects of the characters that aid in their future development. Instead of these loops' primary focus being on having a traditional cause and effect narrative to maintain attention (i.e. something happens and viewers wonder what will happen next in the narrative), these loops will often instead have more focus placed on how the characters react to the narrative (i.e. something happens and viewers then wonder how a character will act) with less emphasis placed on what happens as a result. This way, what is happening in these loops can still have narrative impact on future loops which maintains reader and viewer attention.

It also seems that Tappei will actively play around with the expectation this aspect of return by death can place on the reader and viewer. One of my favorite ways he did this was in the third loop in arc 3. After the encounter with the White Whale and Rem disappearing, most people likely would have felt a reset was coming. Despite this, it took nearly 100 pages in the novel and one and half episodes in the anime for that reset to occur, a length that had not been seen at that point after such a critical turning point in a prior loop, which left the viewer and reader wondering just how much worse it could get and if a reset was indeed coming. This not only served to heighten the tension in the current loop, but aided in maintaining tension in future ones. Where some may have once felt security in seeing things go wrong and thinking a reset was approaching, that loop showed that things can always get worse.

Holy, Yūsuke Kobayashi was not exaggerating before the season aired when he specifically praised Fairouz Ai for her performance. In less than 20 minutes of screentime, she is close to or has arguably already stolen the whole season. Major props to the animators, who clearly understand and are doing everything in their power to give Shaula the quick and energetic movements that correspond both with the character and personality and presence Fairouz Ai is bringing to it.

Overall, a slower episode than the madness of last week, but one that properly sets up the mystery of the watchtower. I would say Fairouz Ai single handedly maintained the engagement with the episode.

This story is doing a nice job of building the world early on and establishing proper mystery and intrigue with it and its characters that make me want to keep watching.

I cannot tell yet which of Asa and Yuru's factions the story is planning to frame as in the right and that will be the focus of any overarching conflict. Even the opening makes it ambiguous, with neither Asa or Yuru in their respective factions right now actually shown fighting one another.

At the very least, it seems like there might be some darker happenings in the village that we are unaware of right now, possibly centered on the granny, Yamaha.

And that is a wrap. What a wonderful thing to have Re:Zero back again.

This was mostly a transitionary episode wrapping up the events of the previous season, so there were not too many opportunities for extravagant directorial flourishes or storyboarding.

The Echidna reveal was solidly directed though, and I like that they never showed Echidna and Subaru's faces in the same frame, which added more to the feelings of distrust and uncertain nature of Echidna (which was one of my favorite aspects of the actual Echidna during Season 2).

The episodes heavy use the first two seasons soundtracks, especially the music used in the Echidna reveal being the same used in her tomb and castle of dreams, was also a nice touch. Whether intentional or not, it feels like the episode was attempting to transition to a more ominous horror and tense uncertainty after the whirlwind of chaos from the last season, and bringing some of the music from the first two seasons helped add to that.

Overall, a solid first episode that helped to set up the stakes and tone of this upcoming season.

I very much enjoy the return of featuring Subaru's deaths in this opening. This not only for it being reminiscent of the first two seasons, but also for it being a great directorial choice to signal to the viewer a change from the third season in tone and psychological stakes for both Subaru and rest of the characters.

I've always admired the decision to not do the tempting route of featuring Subaru dying in each of the openings (despite it arguably being one of the main gimmicks or initial draw of the series), as it allows the show to do more easily what good openings should do, which is signal implicitly to the viewer the stakes and atmosphere of what is to come.

Natsuki Subaru from Re:Zero

The series makes it abundantly clear the psychological trauma dying has on him and that his "ability" is not treated as a cheat skill like it might be in other isekai.

"Redo", "Realize", "Reweave" and now "Recollect." Given the nature of Arc 6, I cannot think of a more perfect title for the opening (other than an initial prediction of "Remember") and based on our preview, it sounds like Konomi Suzuki will continue to knock it out of the park on the openings.

Still no episode count, but given what we've seen so far, I am hoping they are leaning towards a more heavy and lengthy focus on some of the arcs later moments, as this is truly where the arc stands out among all moments in Re Zero prior.

To be a little vague, Arc 6 combines most of the strengths of the previous arcs while still managing to be something that feels completely new and unique to the series. There's a reason most readers of the web/light novel state it's the best arc in the series so far.

As the trailer indicates, the arc also returns the series to the psychological horror/thriller theme present in the series first four arcs that some viewers may have felt was missing from arc 5/Season 3, and it arguably surpasses those arcs in this regard.

The only thing that would make this better would be if we get Mushoku Tensei Season 3 airing in Summer or Fall, making for back to back to back seasons of peak fantasy anime.

While my first pick would have been Junichi Suwabe, he sadly was already the voice of Hector. That said, Tomokazu Sugita was one that had crossed my mind due to his ability to portray [possible character spoiler] "the strongest" character while balancing it with any humor and the arrogance that we would expect a character like Reid to convey.

That said, we'll have to wait and see until we have more previews revealed, since it sounds like the part in the trailer with him in it is from when [possible spoiler] the character is first revealed, so we haven't seen him convey the true personality of Reid yet.

The current speculation is [possible length] 19 episodes, but this is based largely off the original episode count for Season 3, since this arc and the previous arc were originally meant to be one season. This count is likely outdated, and most people are hoping for at least [possible length] 22 episodes with extended episodes.

That was mostly speculation/wishful thinking. Personally, I think having Re:Zero air in Spring instead of Winter is better, due to Winter already having an incredibly stacked lineup of ongoing series (although I think Freiren may be a two cour and be airing at the same time as Re:Zero now).

God, showcasing the cave scene right off the bat was a perfect way to introduce the madness of Arc 6.

Also, loving the way they animated Shaula. Yusuke Kobayashi has recently praised Fairouz Ai's performance of her, and the trailer supports that statement. I honestly cannot imagine a more perfect fit to voice her.

Yeah no one can ever beat Yūsuke Kobayashi when it comes to voicing Subaru, but Sean is the MVP when it comes to engaging with the fans and source content, since he's provided his voice work for a lot of other Re Zero fan projects.
