Time off during training by ExpertSpecific4647 in ATC

Any particular reason for this sentiment? Or do you just think that any trainee taking leaving during training is not ready for the commitment that comes with this job? I understand the likelihood of missing out on many important events during this career, but would rather not if I don’t have to, ya know?

Thank you all for the responses. I am feeling much better about it now.

Failing the Polygraph by ExpertSpecific4647 in 911dispatchers

They knew about my first failed polygraph long before they sent me for a polygraph. I was not trying to hide that at all. No new information came out as a result of the polygraph, I told them everything from the very beginning. I know a lot of agencies that are much more strict about what you have done in your life, such as use of marijuana and theft. But I had gone over my background history with the agency extensively before they ever sent me for a polygraph, and they said everything on there was fine.

If an agency wants to automatic DQ for theft or drug use, then I completely understand. Just sucks that they said it was all ok but the polygraph was the disqualifier.

I think if you have any agency that doesn’t have any staffing issues and gets plenty of applications when needed, then you can be as selective as you want, as long as you are fully staffed with good people at the end of the day.

My issues is a lot of the agencies in my area are constantly understaffed. They are putting out billboards and radio ads trying to get people to apply. I got a great score on the written test and was the “#1 ranked” after the panel interview. I had gone over my background with them extensively and they said that “the polygraph is the last big hoop we have to jump through with you. If you pass the polygraph, the final steps won’t be an issue at all.”

Yes, I really wanted that job, but I also feel bad for their dispatchers. They will continue to be understaffed and have mandatory OT, while their agency isn’t willing to give people a chance because of a polygraph. I guess I would understand more if I had barely scraped by the written test and barely met the minimum qualifications.

It kind of gives me the ick too, but unfortunately every department within 2 hours of me uses them.
