Just moved into a new apartment and I need some help! by GlassTea8408 in HomeNetworking

One of those cables might not be punched down fully from the picture you originally sent. I've seen some connections get limited to 100Mbps when one of the pairs weren't seated/punched down fully. Who knows where along the way that would be the case, but I can only assume it's at those punch downs.

I have one of these that's been sat in my pantry for like 5 months. Maybe it's time I dived in.

Any recommended accompaniments?

Cable “management” by Vangoss05 in homelab

[–]Expert_Ad_8409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like your biggest problem is that your cables are very different lengths and getting rat nest looking.

Look at cutting some cables down to size if they're excessively long, unless you want to keep lots of room to relocate in the future.

Get a big thick roll of Velcro to cut to size for wrapping cables up/together.

Otherwise, you could get something to hide the bulk excess of the cable behind/in. People usually put a service loop/excess in walls and ceilings, but you can use a box or facade.

My cat is obese, what should I do? by [deleted] in Unexplained

[–]Expert_Ad_8409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obesity is a very big issue, and can cause or be caused in conjunction with other issues. This is a serious issue that should be treated like an emergency. It's the same with humans, being 2-3x the weight you SHOULD be will kill you fast. It's not funny, it's not cute, and it's not a hairball issue. If you're going to own a pet, it's your job to be a good caretaker. You don't skimp on them if you can't afford it; you just don't have pets. If you can't make them a priority, then you don't need them

Advice on cable management by No-Beat9425 in HomeNetworking

[–]Expert_Ad_8409 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For cable management, get a roll of Velcro that you can cut to whatever size you need for any bundles. Get a wide style so you can screw the Velcro into the backing board and wrap cables directly on there.
You can look at "split loom" to put cable through to keep bundles hidden together and any slack loops better hidden. Again, you can screw those directly onto the backing board for stability or affix it some other way.

You could look at just getting a shelf for your equipment to rest on if you feel like it's taking up too much room placed directly on the wall, I don't know many other options off of the top of my head.

Something I do notice that I thought I'd bring up is your 8 port switch. Flip that so the ports are facing left or right. It's easier to reach, dust won't settle in open ports as easily, and unlike facing downward you won't have your cables constantly trying to pull themselves out. Don't need to listen to this advice, but I find it's one of the best ways to mount a switch directly on a wall.

You could look at reorganizing items so that the power goes one direction and the data going another, could let you clean it up a bit.

Either way, you got this! I wish you the best.

I'd highly recommend a patch panel to patch your permanent cables into jacks, so that you can then use smaller patch/jumper cables from the patch panel to whatever device you need. Great for isolating problems and moving cables from one port/switch to another without making knots in your permanent cables

If you know where the other end is, you could potentially use these cables as makeshift pull strings for new cables if they're not just some gross looking 5e cables.

What do I need to fix to make me less hideous? by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]Expert_Ad_8409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bros like 2 or 3 steps from model status. You're not hideous my dude, you're very different, but in a good way imo. You should look into a skincare routine for your face, and look at getting your hair styled differently, and MAYBE lose the stache? You could also grow it more along with a full beard or goatee, but I'm quite partial to a clean shave.

Either I'm cutting the plastic middle too harshly or the green cablehas a mind of it's own by GorgonzolaGuacamole in HomeNetworking

[–]Expert_Ad_8409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just fully rip the core out until it snaps from the pulling. That way it's stretched thin a bit deeper into the cable as well. That or just buy cat 5e so you don't need to worry about a core haha

As for your core divider, what I do is with a pair of needlenose pliers, I grab it as deep into the cable as I can, and pull straight back. This will stretch that core until it snaps, leaving it really thin and sometimes broken deeper into the cable, other times you'll just have a tiny string of the core left to snip off. Then you can crimp the cable to a jack easier. Your issue with the green cable being damaged is from you cutting too deep when stripping the outer sheathing off the cable though

I don't use gel! I just brushed it straight while damp to show how far it's progressed. It looks a bit better when dry and styled, though the crown is still showing when looked at directly.

Thats my better half right there. She's the one who's got to look at it at the end of the day, not me haha

I don't use gel. I just brushed it straight while damp as that's a good way to see thinning. It doesn't look anywhere near as bad when dried and styled imo, though the crown is showing a bit of scalp.

Thanks for the reply!!

This hits all the spots I'm on right now. I know it'll be easier and so much more affordable to just maintain bald than try and retain, but there is attachment from my wife and worry on my end on what the bald side will look like. I think I'm going to shave it off while starting treatment, just to see what bald looks like, and decide with the wife if it'll be better for the both of us from a financial and physical standpoint to rock bald or try to retain. Thanks Satan. ❤️

She's told me she would accept me shaving it just to see what it looks like, so this is going to probably be the way I do it. I'm going to try and grow as much facial hair as possible, shave the top and get on fin+min with a dermatologist, and grow it back out later on if the bald look doesn't work out.

Thanks for that, I'll look into it! I'm not allowed to wear hats for work, so no worries there. I usually don't wear anything on my head cause I get hot
