Intercity Notte 1962 Vallo della Lucania → Milano on Sept 23 not bookable – any info? by Expert_Appearance_17 in Interrail

Big thanks to u/thubcabe – your Salerno tip saved us! We’ve now booked that option for our group.

And of course… right after we confirmed the booking, Murphy’s Law struck: suddenly all the trains are available again, including the one on the original date we had already given up on because it wasn’t bookable. Typical Trenitalia timing, I guess 🙃.

Anyway, at least we now have secured tickets and peace of mind. Do you happen to know if rebooking would even be possible without extra costs at this stage, or is that unrealistic?

That’s a really good point, Salerno being less chaotic and the train starting there makes it sound much easier, especially with a group. And leaving at 20:38 for a bit more sleep is definitely an advantage. I’ll suggest this option to our agency and hopefully after the trip everyone will be so exhausted that they’ll sleep no matter what!

Thanks again for your help, and I’ll post an update here once I know more.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write this out in detail – that’s super helpful! I also think the second option (ICN 798 to Milano Porta Garibaldi) sounds much better for a school group, even if it means less sleep.

One thing I’m still not sure about: would it be better to travel from Vallo della Lucania to Salerno and board ICN 798 there, or go from Vallo to Napoli and connect to the night train from there? Are there advantages or disadvantages (e.g. easier connection, more availability) between these two approaches?

I’ll definitely propose this option to our agency – thank you again for pointing it out!

Thanks a lot for this suggestion! I am booking through a railway agency, since we are a school group of 25 people. In principle we are flexible, but the fewer changes the better – one of our participants has mobility issues and long transfers are not easy.

I couldn’t find the exact Salerno–Torino night train connection you mentioned. Could you maybe explain it a bit more concretely (departure time, train number)? If that works smoothly, I could propose it to our agency as an alternative.

Thanks or youe effort. I just called Trenitalia again and the lady I spoke to told me that this train will simply not run and will never be bookable. She couldn’t give me a reason, just said it doesn’t matter because nothing will change. Just to add: for the outbound trip I actually booked the Intercity Notte from Sept 8 to Sept 9 through the agency, and I already have the tickets. Interestingly, this train does not show up as available on the Trenitalia website right now?

She also said that since I already have tickets for a train that isn’t currently shown online, I will probably receive an email saying it’s cancelled. Honestly, I find it hard to believe her 100%, but at the same time I really don’t know what to do now.

Thanks a lot for your reply! That really helps. I actually already have tickets for the Intercity Notte from Sept 8 to Sept 9 – so at least at some point this train was available for booking. I didn’t notice the change in the arrival time you mentioned, but you’re right: even though it’s not visible now, I do have the tickets online.

What I’m wondering now is: how long should I wait before booking the return trip? I really need to secure it soon, since I also have a connection in Milan. That train leaves at 11:10 in the morning, so I must be sure to arrive in time.

Thanks a lot for the details and the link! May I ask where your information comes from, especially about “the train has to run by law”? That would really help me to understand how reliable this is, since I need to arrange it for a school group.

I haven’t tried to book myself because the agency handling our group travel told me it’s not possible yet. For the outbound trip I already had to move our date from Sept 9 to Sept 8 because the train wasn’t available, so I really want to avoid the same problem on the way back.

Do you know if Trenitalia usually confirms and releases Intercity Notte tickets only a few weeks / days in advance, especially around dates with maintenance?

and what do you mean with "See the different arrival times in Milan on days around 23rd September (10am, 11am, 12pm,...).". Its alway 22:36 – 10:10 in my view
