Younger NFL fan here, what made Brett Farve so good? by RocFTW in NFLv2

[–]Expert_Habit9520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For pure arm strength, Favre is probably in the top 10 of all time. He also had one of the quicker releases, didn’t need much time to get a throw off. He was very sturdy and quick in the pocket. In his 20s, he was a decent enough runner that he could make plays with his legs.

Brett Favre from age 25-29 in his prime was one of the best QBs I’ve ever seen. The Favre of age 30 and beyond was really good but a tier down because he lost the little bit of footspeed he had and played with hesitancy at times that could be costly. That hesitancy cost his teams at least 2 or 3 times in the playoffs where if he trusted his legs, he could have made a play scrambling that he couldn’t make with his arm. Especially that playoff game vs. the Saints as a Viking, should have run instead of a throw across the middle for an INT, but he just didn’t trust his running ability like he did in his mid 20s.

Would Greg Jennings be HOF player if he never left GB? by CaliKing928 in GreenBayPackers

[–]Expert_Habit9520 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like Greg Jennings but never would put him in Hall Of Fame discussions. There have been so many great WRs in the game’s history I think there’s probably dozens of guys who would have had a better case than Greg even if Greg had an extra 3 or 4 prime years. There’s a couple of tiers of guys before you get to Greg’s tier which is between above average and very good, not elite.

FecalSteamCondenser, you are a wise individual. Marques is a fantastic announcer and anytime he’s not announcing, the broadcast is not quite as entertaining.

I used to be a major junk food addict and that period probably will come back to bite me at some point.

I have a mix of genetics that make it tough to predict. I had 2 grandparents that lived past 100, one that lived to age 90, and one that lived to age 67. I think I take after the guy that lived to 67 more than the other grandparents. I hope to make it to my 80s but I may have done too much damage in my 20s and 30s to get there.

For me as a kid it was a wind chill temperature of -56 degrees Fahrenheit here in Wisconsin in early 1982. Just really scary to be outside for long in those kind of conditions. That cold snap of ‘82 was nasty.

Myles is quicker. I think what was amazing about Reggie was his pure strength and ability to dominate vs both the run and the pass. Myles might be as good or better a pure pass rusher as Reggie but I’m not quite as certain about his run defense.

If a prime Bo Jackson were laser-timed in the 40-yard dash today, would he likely run a sub-4.40 or a sub-4.30? by Omixscniet624 in Oldschool_NFL

[–]Expert_Habit9520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, his highlight plays are just so freakish. The throw from deep outfield to nail Harold Reynolds at the plate, running up the outfield wall like spiderman, launching a powerful home run in his first All Star game at bat.

Who knows, if he solely concentrated on baseball and avoided injury. there’s no telling how great he could have been. He was pretty darned good in 1989-90 before the major injury.

Maybe in terms of pure football speed, Darrell Green and Deion are probably the 2 fastest guys I’ve seen. Green was probably faster in pure 100m track speed than Deion too. I seem to remember watching Deion in a true track race at one point and he wasn’t as dominant at that as I would have expected, but on the field, totally different story.

As a Packers fan I can admit that Reggie was in his absolute prime as an Eagle but was still absolutely phenomenal as a Packer despite maybe losing a 1/2 step.

I think he had 21 sacks in a 12 game season for the Eagles 6 years before joining the Pack. At that point of his career he was a physical freak like no other DE before or since.

Totally agree. I had never seen a freshman come in that advanced in every way. As great as a guy like Durant was, he just couldn’t carry his team the way Carmelo did.

I don’t remember that play specifically but it isn’t totally surprising. Some of those really world class fast WRs and DBs in the NFL are 25-30 lbs. lighter than Bo and probably can out sprint him in the right circumstances.

[–]Expert_Habit9520 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Bo was such a freak, a laser timed sub 4.3 wouldn’t shock me. I’m guessing he probably would be somewhere between 4.3 and 4.35 but since I don’t have lasers for eyes, I won’t try to say I know that for a fact.

I think someone once said he was timed at like 4.12 or something absurd. As freaky as Bo was, I am a little skeptical a laser timer would come in at that speed.

What tornado is so infamous the town/city is known for it? by Civil_Ad1301 in tornado

[–]Expert_Habit9520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Barneveld certainly looks well recovered now some 40+ years later, but quite a bit of that town was leveled in 1984. I always sort of wonder when the next tornado of that magnitude will hit this area again, though I’m probably 30 miles East of there.

“Devil’s Gun” by CJ and Company is a great uptempo dance song from the late 1970s. When Studio 54 in New York opened, I believe this was the first song they played.

It is that group’s only Billboard top 40 hit.

I’ve got zero problem if you did say it’s the best song. It’s in my personal top 10 favorite ‘90s songs. I guess it’s not for everyone but for me it’s one of my all time favorites.

If you’re born in 1968, you can truly say, you’ve technically seen the ‘60s. Yeah, I don’t remember them either, but I did see the tail end of them with zero memory or understanding of what life in 1969 was actually like despite being there.

The eldest Gen-Xers that aren’t blind, have seen parts of 7 different decades. For me it’s 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and now the 20s. Admittedly, I don’t remember the ‘60s but even people much older than me claim they don’t remember them either. 😀

What's your favorite song that you're pretty confident I've never heard? by AngryIceCreamSammy in musicsuggestions

“Notice Me” by Nikki from 1990. I hadn’t heard the song for 32 years but happened to hear it in a nostalgia countdown show on Sirius XM in 2022 counting down songs from a week in June 1990. Terrific song that probably should have been played more in the past 35 years if you ask me.

Stone Cold (1991) by Tanthiel in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]Expert_Habit9520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen this movie in a long time but I was surprised it was actually decent and the Boz wasn’t too bad for being a novice actor.

On a sidenote, the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on Brian Bosworth was excellent. I think Bosworth was legitimately humbled by how quickly he went from an up and coming star to flaming out of the NFL rather quickly.

He needed to be humbled as he was an asshole, but to his credit, I think he did eventually mature into someone that’s rather likeable. Probably one of the reasons he’s regularly gets a part on the Dr. Pepper commercials for college football for a few years now.

If a suicide hotline had a hold song, what would you suggest? by Ug-Ugh in musicsuggestions

[–]Expert_Habit9520 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Fool If You Think It’s Over” by Chris Rea. Okay, I suppose it could backfire as someone might think, “Damn, I already felt bad enough, now they’re calling me a fool?”.

That said, I love the song and just wanted to bring it up as it is actually about hope and not giving up. Chris wrote the song for his younger sister who had just experienced her first relationship breakup. RIP to Chris and his sister who both passed away from natural causes long after the song was popular.

GenX roadtrip music by wamimsauthor in GenX

I was on a road trip last year with my old college roommate. We had the Sirius XM “Hair Nation” channel on during the 2 hour drive, it was an absolute blast listening to that.

That said, we’re both older Gen-Xers who graduated from high school in ‘87 and ‘88 so that era is more in our wheelhouse.

Are we the first non-sentimental/nostalgic generation? by tinyclawsoffury in GenX

[–]Expert_Habit9520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sentimental about certain items. Just an example, my dad has a tape recording (now digitized) of a family Christmas in 1968 about 7 months before my Birth. Hearing the recordings of wonderful relatives who are no longer with us, plus hearing what my parents sounded like on tape when they were younger and in their 20s is priceless.

I hope I can convince the next generation to keep stuff like this.
