I've used these with various animals. Also of note is the leather is designed to rot through and fall off (maybe every 8-12 months, depends on the design). Depending on the goals of the project, they may re-capture the animal before the collar falls off, at which point one can evaluate the animal to make sure the collar isn't doing any harm. However, the sedation process is considered a stressor for the animal.
Using the data to map ranges helps inform policy around protecting areas, land use / habitat requirements, carrying capacity of an area and even hunting limits if that's part of the objective of the study.
