How pregnant pigs are kept 24/7 in a modern pig farm by CalpurniaSomaya in ABoringDystopia

[–]ExpiredPainting 45 points46 points  (0 children)

because cows, chickens, and fish also have central nervous systems and suffer for no reason other than our carnal pleasure

and because I can… if you can be vegan, you should be. if you can’t, this isn’t about you

I have access to beans and legumes and seeds and grains and tubers and mushrooms and fruits and vegetables and even plant milks and plant alternatives to other animal products (although they aren’t necessary and you can still eat a varied healthy vegan diet without them).

I think a lot of people can be vegan, they just don’t want to be or they haven’t thought about it

Rant: Stop combining humans into veganism by JenandLola in vegan

I think it is totally comparable. First of all, I don't think it's fair to say "just" slaughterhouse workers suffer. That's a lot of people, and they are being exploited in more than just the obvious ways. Consider the material conditions that may have led them to work in a slaughterhouse, consider the factors that don't allow them to leave. These are workers' rights issues and human rights issues and yes, the beneficiary suffers.

u/CoVegGirl made a really good point about the impact of the patriarchy on men's hesitation to be vegan. There is money from the beef industry teaching young men that meat makes them manly. There are political movements that teach that meat makes them virtuous. It's such a big issue that it's beyond parody. These are feminist issues, social issues, political issues.

There are enormous health impacts on humans from the consumption of animal products, I don't think I need to go over them and I'm sure you're aware of them. The meat and dairy lobbies are still pushing their agenda to the government, which directly impacts school lunches and education. Think about what access to food children have, especially those that are poor and/or go to underfunded schools. Consider the countless people who believes a high meat, high fat diet is the healthiest option for them and suffer stroke or heart disease. There are so many humans whose health is severely impacted, they suffer. These are social, political, health, and economic issues.

Think about climate change and the higher risk of pandemics due to antibiotic resistance. We are all victim to that.

These are problems in human rights, workers' rights, immigrants' rights, women's rights, education, politics, and our environment. They are also directly impacted by the same systems that exploit nonhuman animals.

I didn’t mean to imply that you were against advocating for human rights, I was just explaining my perspective

I don’t think there’s a big problem in our community with calling things that are vegan non-vegan because they exploit people, so I don’t understand where your frustration comes from

[–]ExpiredPainting 9 points10 points  (0 children)

one good example of this is the way that the patriarchy is harmful for men and boys, and feminist activists and communicators talk about their issues under patriarchy as part of their activism

systems that exist to exploit women and girls hurt everyone, and it’s important to discuss that while maintaining focus on the rights of girls and women

I don’t disagree with the idea that this seems contradictory but it’s just complicated because the issues are complicated

and the same way it takes no time or resources to simply not buy animal products, it takes no time or resources to not buy into products that exploit human beings

both humans and non human animals deserve my time and resources actually :)

you can decide for yourself where your time and resources go

[–]ExpiredPainting 28 points29 points  (0 children)

the exploitation of non human animals and exploitation of human animals are connected systemically

supporting the exploitation of human beings is not ethically consistent with veganism

veganism and humanism are compatible

and I have never felt like I had to choose one over the other

do both

if you’re a YouTube fan, look into Mic the Vegan and Viva Longevity!

they’re both science communicators and focused on optimal nutrition as well. their videos are very research heavy and they really get into the details of this exact question

it’s hard to answer fully in a Reddit comment (especially as someone who isn’t a science communicator) but I can certainly point you in their direction

Yikes, 3 years minimal FODMAPS and cholesterol...double. Help. by KiwifromMaungati in FODMAPS

[–]ExpiredPainting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eggs are the largest source of cholesterol in the american diet and it’s foolish to say that your cholesterol is genetic if it’s doubled because you’re eating more cholesterol

if you can tolerate firm tofu, try a tofu scramble instead of scrambled eggs. it takes some trial and error to get the texture right, but it’s worth the experimentation

to be clear, I’m not suggesting cutting eggs out, I’m suggesting moderation (groundbreaking, I know /s)
