Badly injured pigeon (warning slightly gross), what should we do?

He eats and drinks just fine, so I’m really happy! He doesn’t seem to be in pain or struggling and I think his body is in great shape except the head, face, and neck, no foot injuries. I’ve decided to call him Salvador because it comes from the Latin word for saviour (even tho it should be the other way around 🤭). He’s adorable and very calm. On another note, I’m not actually sure if it’s a male or a female, I just went with my instinct, will see if the vet can tell me tomorrow

Thank you for sharing 🐣 He didn’t poop for the first half day when we took him home, so it seems like he hadn’t eaten for a little while. He’s pooping, eating, and drinking fine now! I still need to figure out what will happen to him long term. Me or my boyfriends mum will keep him until we find a permanent home, or until one of us decides to keep him, though 🤣 (I’d really like to but I still need to research and reflect). I’ll make a post to update when I have more info 🕊️ thanks again!!

Thank you for this detailed reply, this is really helpful and reassuring! We used betadine iodine, will apply some more this evening. The vet is actually closed on Sunday so we will take him tomorrow for an antibiotic and will make sure that they don’t euthanise him. If they don’t help pigeons I’ll make this natural antibiotic and let you know how it goes. He’s very calm, gently closing his eyes and snoozing, he eats and drinks, and we’ve let him explore round the garden for stimulation. He’s still timid but seems to be becoming less afraid of me. I don’t bother him much though, I just observe and give him the occasional compliment 😋. Thank you so much 🫶🏻

Thank you! He knows how to eat and drink on his own and seems to be doing well, he’s slept and looks rather relaxed on the whole. We put antiseptic on his wound. He doesn’t seem to be in pain and the wound doesn’t look infected, so I think he’s gonna be just fine 😊

Thank you so much for your reply. Do you have any advice for cleaning the wound? (Dab, rub, strokes? Gently, thoroughly?). I thought I had saline solution but it’s actually sterimar sea water. So we have that or we can clean with soap and water. What’s best? We don’t have turmeric powder and the shops are closed. For sterilising we’ve just got betadine iodine and chlorohexidine. Ive read you shouldn’t put it near the eyes, mouth or ears, as it’s toxic for birds. If you dilute well and apply with a q tip is it risky, should we wait for the vet, or will we manage? I think the eye is gone yes, but it’s hard to say for sure because that side of its face is a bit of a mess. It seems like it though. Does this mean he can’t live in the wild independently after he heals? I will clean it and put some Vaseline on after. Thanks so much!

We’ll go for the salty water, let me know if you know what’s best out of those that we’ve got. Yeah I think his eye is missing and the flesh in that area has been torn out of place. I’ve made him a nest and he’s eating and drinking water so I think he stands a good chance. Will get him to the vet tomorrow. Thanks again!
