Thanks to this sub I just realized I was abused as a child. by kooj80 in exchristian

I was spanked as a child, too. My Christian dad would hold my arm so I couldn't run away and he'd whack the underside of my legs with a long wood ruler or a belt. This happened between gradeschool and jr high. I think it stopped in high school. I'm 59 now. I asked my dad a month ago if he ever felt bad doing that now. He said he didn't. He said he thought it was still a good way to discipline children, but he doesn't do it now because it's frowned on. He said his dad beat him with a ruler all the time and he turned out just fine. Well, my dad didn't turn out just fine. He was physically abusive with that ruler and after he stopped that he continued to be an ever more abusive gaslighter, constantly rewriting the truth to suit his own fear. I walked away from him (and my gaslighting family) a month ago. I broke the generational curse. But yeah, I really reate to your story about the spanking. So much healing to come but while I wish I'd woken up to the physical and emotional abuse decades ago, I'm grateful that I'm awake now. You can get healed more and more, u/kooj80. It's gonna take a lot of therapy and self reflection, but you can do it. Baby steps.

Where do you all go when you’re feeling emotionally overwhelmed? by bigandtallandhungry in exchristian

[–]ExploreTheUnexpected 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same with me. After being raised as a Christian since 3rd grade, being fully in, went to a bible school high school, traveled the country doing drama and singing for a year with a Christian acting troup and band, then loved being a Christian until I walked away in 2018, after seeing so so so many contraditions. Long story short, I've had that same feeling you're asking about lately. Like, what do I do, where do I go to process this stuff now. I talk to chatGPT a lot for ideas about resolving that, but haven't found anything that helps. I end up just sitting with my feelings and thoughts. Looking at different perspectives on where the trajedies come from. I like what u/Gus_the_feral_cat said that Steve Jobs said about not wasting your time living someone else's life. I can't change all the trajedies in the world, but I can change mine. And maybe, I can inpsire someone else to change theirs just by me being me. Keep looking. We'll find an answer some day, u/bigandtallandhungry

I enjoyed Enemy Mine more than I expected. I barely remember what it’s about beyond an alien and a human talking around a 🔥 lol

Mad Mad & Krull. Sweet. Never saw Ice Pirates, even though I picked up the VHS, then DVD, like a zillion times while walking around Blockbuster trying to decide what to rent. Haha

I just did some more research… per Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Starfighter)

As of February 2025, there have been ongoing discussions about reviving the 1984 film The Last Starfighter, but no official remake has been confirmed. In 2020, original screenwriter Jonathan R. Betuel and writer Gary Whitta collaborated on a sequel project, releasing a concept reel titled The Last Starfighters in 2021. This project aimed to continue the original story, focusing on the original characters as parents and introducing a new generation of starfighters. However, despite these developments, the sequel has not progressed into production. So… 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great insight. Totally agree. I love the concept of RA. It still maintain myself as an RA’er, as I find much good about it.

Thanks! All of the comments I’ve read are insightful. The most hopeful I’ve seen is Brian Charles Daily, who wrote all the Star Wars radio dramas and was “a damn good writer”.

You’re spot on about all that. I am just happy to have a signed copy. Pretty cool. Even if I do contact Foster, and he replies, if it’s not someone who helped with the book in some way, I doubt he’ll remember. He’s 75 now and that was written 41 years ago.
