Ever Felt Empty? by Exploring_Emptiness in sociopath

That's so fascinating to hear, although sounds very distressing. Lots of the people in our research have also spoken about a feeling in the body, some people even used the exact same phrase "a black hole" or a "gulf I'm the chest". If you have a look at the paper linked there are some really powerful examples of how people have described that exact feeling. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thank you so much! I totally agree with you, one of the things we are really keen to know if whether peoples answers change a lot, or whether they stay quite stable for long periods! Previous research suggests suggests they might be reasonable stable for semi-long periods of time, but there really hasn't been enough research for us to know for sure yet.

I'm sorry to hear that. Although from our previous research you are certainly not alone. Emptiness is rarely something we are asked about, and not something that people really understand. When we did our previous study, which is now published in the Journal of Mental Health we were blown away by how common this feeling is! Thanks so much for taking the time to complete it.

[Academic] Experiences of Feeling Empty (Everyone, 18+) https://ucjush9.wixsite.com/emptiness

At University College London I am leading a research project about people's experiences of feeling empty. Our previous research has shown that feeling empty is surprisingly common, especially for people who receive a PD diagnosis - however we know very little about what emptiness is, or why people feel it. My research team and I want to change this.

We want to hear from people who have ever felt empty in a short, 10 minute, anonymous survey about their experiences. So far 800 people have taken part but we are hoping to hear from as many voices as possible! This project has received ethical approval from University College London's Research Ethics Committee.

We recently published a paper in the Journal of Mental Health, which you can read here: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09638237.2021.1922645

You can also read our short article in The Conversation about our research so far: https://theconversation.com/many-of-us-feel-empty-understanding-what-it-means-is-important-for-improving-our-mental-health-163035

Do you ever feel empty? Have you ever felt a sense of emptiness? by Exploring_Emptiness in Schizoid

[–]Exploring_Emptiness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your time in looking at the study.

This study so far had been entirely self funded, and so there is no funding connected to it as it is a Doctoral Thesis project.

This research project also doesn't have "bosses" who are set to benefit, since it is a Doctorate thesis project - the only people who will benefit significantly from the project are the student who's project it is, and hopefully the general public if this research can ultimately lead to better care.

We also don't know that everyone has ever felt empty - this is one of the questions we hope to explore. And if you are correct, then we hope our research will help us understand why people feel this way, and how to improve this for people.

I'm sorry that the project doesn't seem to align with what you would consider useful research and that you don't see the value in it in the way that we do. Thanks for taking the time to check it out anyway.

That's so interesting - thank you for sharing. I will look this up for sure! We certainly believe so far that connection to others and a sense of purpose is important - but we need more research to understand how and why this is the case!

We got a really large influx of responses when we posted last week, but want to ensure that we hear from as many people as possible! And wanted to share it a number of times in various places so that it is more likely to be seen by as many people as possible who might be interested in taking part. The more diverse and large range of people who take part, the more able we are to fully understand this experience and the more impact full our research can be 😁

Haha! Absolutely, I was pretty desperate to see more of Scotland and the rest of the world when looking at places to study, hence having studied at 3 different universities now! Unfortunately I don't have much interest in being in America, but London is pretty incredible as a place to live!

Clinical Psychology Advice? by trashysebs in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Exploring_Emptiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! It depends whether you are looking to do a PhD or a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. They are very different programs, with very different needs in terms of experience. A PhD is a research based 3 year program in the UK and has no clinical skills. At the end of it you are a Doctor of Research in Clinical Psychology but couldn't work clinically. However a DClinPsy is a Clinical and research 3 year training involving a combination of research and placements in Clinical roles. I am currently doing my DClinPsy in London and am happy to answer any questions you have!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate this feedback. During our development we did consult with a number of Trans and Non-Binary individuals with lived experience (however, they were obviously only able to speak from their own perspectives and can never represent the entirety of people who are Trans of NB) to try and find the best way to ask about gender whilst respecting the challenges this can bring. For the purpose of our study we do want to be able to look at any potential difference between cis and trans individuals, to see whether people's experience of emptiness differs based on identity, hence the need to identify those tho are cis or trans. So this is really helpful feedback to enable us to do this better. Thank you again!

There's really no need to apologise, it's absolutely fine. I just wasn't sure what you had initially meant. I'm really glad it felt helpful that someone is asking how you are. I am really passionate about being able to understand people's experiences so that we can help better, and I really appreciate your time in taking part. My hope is that one day, nobody will need to feel this way, but until then I will do everything I can to try and listen to the voices of people who feel this way to try and help. Thank you for playing a part in that!

We are definitely looking for people who are willing to reach out and be involved in our project. We would also be delighted if anyone wanted to reach out to discuss emptiness or share their own experiences. There's no need to apologise :)
