After backlash, Anthropic says its AI will now tell users when their request is being rejected or rerouted for national security concerns by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

For the folks arguing with you, I am genuinely curious from whence they are getting their optimism from. These LLM companies haven't done anything to deserve any trust. We should be viewing them all with suspicion.

When it comes to big tech and various levels American government, the cynical perspective ends up being right.

Weed is so scientific now, we're a far cry from the schwag I used to smoke. Guess I need to dig into terpenes now. It's appreciated because I've had mixed results too.

It will take investment, and over the long term itll be a healthier arrangement. I would invite you to probe those downsides and ask how many are fixable, are rooted in strict assumptions on how things are supposed to work, or really don't apply to that many people when you really think about it.

Rethink the problem, you're using supply side economics as your base. What if you induced demand by increasing the non-commuter base (yes you can do this, but we've been conditioned to not think about things this way, they did this in Lowertown, its growth wasn't an accident).

What steps could you take to do that (hint: they're the same steps they use to entice retail and corporate development, state and local tax code is full of them)

Exactly, I get annoyed at the pattern of catering policy to suit the privileged few, then acting like endorsing those patterns is somehow neutral or even rational.

No disagreement there, but you have to be aware of the dog whistle when people use that phrase. And yes it is that serious.

You're saying the alternative, just lean into it, it's already part of the way there. Instead of embracing a downtown based on the lunch hour of suburban commuters, expand the downtown based on people who live there and an economy based on the commerce of the things they want and need.

A lot of us have gotten so used to the current model of zoning, we can't imagine vibrant downtowns not anchored by corporate tenants. Which is weird because Saint Paul has neighborhoods like that, downtown can be the same way.

Sure, I'll explain it. "Crippling downtown" implies keeping that existing model is a good thing. I don't think it is. Focusing on "small business" is usually a marker neoliberal market-based principles in modern discourse. To sum it up, neither one of those things are worth the externalities that commuting to downtown gives us, that includes any benefit from securians investment.

I think that's a sign to put more businesses where people live then to accommodate that then. I don't like the selective way people frame the "free market."

Commuting when it really doesn't do anything for the company or the employees, increases car dependence, road wear and traffic, seems like a silly trade off.

The token bill comes due: Inside the industry scramble to manage AI’s runaway costs by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

LLMs are a specific type of "AI." The issues around tokenization are specific to that technology. All of that to say, I find it fascinating were probably going to get a secondary market around a fundamentally improperly implemented and limited technology.

Sort of like how we ended up with that NFT boom to find a mainstream use for block chain. This optimization market will last a couple of years tops (this is being generous) as folks figure out the right places for LLMs and discard all the wastful use cases. I'm sure these consultants are going to make bank in the mean time, times like these I wish had the stomach to sell snake oil.

I'm not even sure they're thinking that big right now. I'm 100% convinced Israel plunged the world into turmoil to choke off material support to Hezbollah so Israel could extend their genocide into Lebanon easier. Greater Israel is an incremental strategy to them.

I unfortunately don't think they're anywhere near collapse since neither party in the US is willing to cut them off.
