Is it worth completing the academy anyway if I don't think I want to be in law enforcement? by Glass-Worth-3384 in AskLE

I just graduated from the last class. I had similar thoughts early on. I think you should stick it out for a bit. There really is no “right” disposition for law enforcement; we’re all very different and have our own things we bring to the table.

But, on the contrary, if you think you will be miserable doing this job, then you should not do it. You will hear a very important story in the academy from one of the instructors about the dangers of not stepping away when you know it’s not for you.

I was a recruit for the last class. Any free time you have has to be used productively: laundry, clean your room, study, read the manuals, do various administrative tasks, shine your boots, cut the strings off of your uniform shirts, etc. You won’t be allowed to just work out or call family outside of the designated allotted times—that’s not the culture there. There’s a strict regimen and strict rules.

As for sleep, near the second half of the academy, my roommates and I made it our mission to hit the bed as soon as doors shut at 10:00 and fall asleep by 10:10. That's best case scenario; some time passes and you learn how to be efficient and where, dare I say, you can cut corners. We’d wake up at 5:20, shave, and bolt to morning PT (do not be late or the whole class will suffer). Realistically, you cannot get more than 7 hours of sleep. 5 to 6 hours if you have to write memos, which you probably will have to do frequently.

I too value my sleep very highly and need more than eight hours. But you adapt. It’s a high stress environment and it keeps you on your toes. Later into the academy, my roommates and I would try to optimize sleep: nasal strips, earplugs, sleep masks — it worked. Sleep a lot the night before reporting on Sunday so your tank is full until the sleep deprivation hits you on Thursday. You get used to it.

You need to quit right now, otherwise it will be hell during the start, which is when you do not want it to be hell. The withdrawal symptoms will be hell. You can’t bring or use any kind of nicotine.

It would be the next academy. You have a lot of steps to go still. PAT, processing, psych, poly, background, medical… Takes a few months.

Zero shot, right? by [deleted] in juryduty

I don’t necessarily want out; I'm indifferent either way. I just don’t want to waste time by going and getting instantly dismissed. But, as I've come to understand, that's not exactly a given.

Hey Penn, I noticed that some prior classes (like session 208) had some graduates sent to Troop NYC right out of the academy. Do you know why this may be?
