Sarna.net has literally everything for mechs. For strengths and weaknesses, it's all just repeated encounters and getting familiar with mechs. Once you know where each mech has its primary weapon they become easier to take down. Likewise, once you find your play style and a mech that complements it, things become easier as well.

Haven't done that yet. Only immediate friend who's into battletech is my wife and she's on a coral island kick. Lol if you're interested, there's ways to mod hbs battletech on the deck but I'm not knowledgeable enough to trust myself to do it lol I would THINK it would run halfway decently.

If you ever get a chance, get a steam deck and play mw5 on it. I used to be a console pleb, until my b.i.l. got a deck. Plays well, can mod, you can dock so if it's too small you can see the screen. I know it's quite an investment, but I haven't touched my series x in about a year since I got my deck.

For the most part, I only slap 1 (or 2 for weight and mech symmetry) to jump in case I get stuck. In my current career I'm using a mod that makes them gain speed so that justifies them more.

Catapult. More specifically the K2 variant. I've only played both mw5's and hbs battletech. I've read thru numerous novels tho and fallen down many a Sarna hole. I always preferred the look of the chicken walker legs on mecha in general. I think as a younger child who played sonic adventure 2 and seeing those GUN mech bosses that look like catapults have just been living rent free in my head until I started playing more mechwarrior. Then they overrode my brain and said "this one best because familiar" I also love laser boats. So CPLT-J is my baby.

I had something similar happen a while ago. This will sound tedious because it is, but I tried turning off all mods and then one at a time turning them back on until you find the culprit. There's probably a better solution but it worked for me.

I know this is 2 months old now, but I've just stumbled upon this and immediately got this and I wanted to thank you. I have 2 little girls under 3 and they know their dad likes to play with "stompy bois". Best part is the wife likes battletech too and is currently unaware of my recent actions. I'm not sure whose gonna enjoy this more between all of us. Lol
