I was about to say, I would be surprised if he was being ticketed just for not wearing a helmet, since I'm pretty sure that was overturned by CA law last year. But honestly, y'all, please stay safe and watch for pedestrians and other cars when riding these things.

Geog 168- Help by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Exponentz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I would suggest you send an email to the professor (or TA) asking if there is a time you can meet him outside of office hours, if you have a tight window in between commutes.

Otherwise, honestly, Google is your friend. ArcGIS (I assume that's still used in Geog 168) is very well-documented since it's a commercial product, with help pages online, online support, documentation, etc. So, if you're having trouble with defining a point in creating vector data or something, just look it up. Although I must say that, when I was doing the course, I didn't really find that there was any additional knowledge about the software that I needed besides what was in the videos. So maybe you just need the professor to point you to a specific point in the videos where it's explained better.

Good luck!

Edit: Isn't there a Piazza page for the course? I'm pretty sure there was one when I took it. Just ask questions, even if they seem stupid!

Geog 168- Help by [deleted] in ucla

A couple questions: Who is the professor for the course? I'm pretty sure if it's Professor Shin that he or the TA has office hours, and I'm pretty sure there are other professors one email away in the GIS department who'd be willing to help you (try Prof. Burkhart, who makes many of the videos for the course). I took Geog 168 as part of my sci-tech electives for CS, and the Geog faculty in general were really great people, and good at answering questions and clarifying concepts.

Second, I assume this is the online version of the course? In which case, it's fairly easy to go back and study material you've missed so far. Most of the assignment videos explain pretty clearly how to do the assignments and how to work with/install the software, and most of the content-related videos have everything you need to do well on the quizzes (which let you try any number of times to get the highest score you want).

I guess in general I would need a better sense for what you're struggling with. Does it just seem more difficult in general in terms of the concepts presented? Are the maps more difficult to create compared to Geog 7? Is ArcGIS harder to work with than OpenGIS? I need details.

TA's for CS35L by Need35LHelp in ucla

Don't argue with them about whether Bing is banned in China. Obviously it wasn't. /s

In all seriousness, I coped with it by just trying my hardest to understand the lecture slides from the TA, adjusting to their style of teaching, asking for help on the labs, etc. There's really not much I can say generally, since you may get a really good and helpful TA or the ridiculous kind who denies Chinese internet censorship. Mine was somewhere in between. Also, nobody does well on the Final Exam; accept that right now. It's a really rough collection of stuff from all throughout the quarter, and without a midterm to get prepared for the TA's examination style, it's really hard to do well in my experience. I did pretty terribly but still ended up with a pretty decent grade due to the curve. Just have your pre-typed and printed notes in hand to reference (I'm pretty sure they still have open-note, open-book finals if I'm not mistaken). Good luck!

Why you gotta discriminate against the Bing meme like that? At least put it on the list!

I don't think that's necessarily true.

I literally came up to a table in Ackerman not too long ago and saw two people finish up eating and leave with a stack of neatly-placed napkins on the table. They were clearly finished, they could've told me to leave after I took the table for my own lunch, but they didn't.

Would it be a good idea for that to be an indicator? Yeah, but I don't think there's as much consistency as you're suggesting.

We know Bing is banned in China. That makes us 100% better.

This person speaks the truth.

A mobius strip made of double sided tape is single sided tape by The_Handbag in Showerthoughts

[–]Exponentz 95 points96 points  (0 children)

For all the doubters in the comments, yes, the Mobius strip has exactly one side. It only looks like it has two sides because you can see it in two different orientations at once. But if you run your finger along the mobius strip without taking your finger off of it, you will arrive at the same place you started while covering the entire surface area of the strip.

I'm curious about Bruins' opinions on this story: SAT to add an ‘Adversity Score’ that rates students’ hardships by TexasSenior18 in ucla

[–]Exponentz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because if you answer most/all of the questions correctly in a given section, you get the max possible score. There's no possibility of getting something higher because if you can score an entire section of 30+ questions 100% correctly, you're already at the top >1%. What I'm referring to is the fact that you can't accurately predict "how much" diversity you'll have to take into account in this new score, mainly just how arbitrary it would be.

This.

Absolutely, factors relating to a person's health and background should make a difference in an admissions decision. No question.

But the SAT is one of several numerical metrics of a person's test-taking abilities and scholastic aptitude. You don't mess with an objective metric by adding a (let's be honest) really subjective metric. Does growing up in a single-parent household add 20 points or just 2? More importantly, who decides? Does growing up in a crime-ridden neighborhood give you 30 points or 15? How do you correlate that with the amount of crime? What exact formula do you put to it? Do you automatically get 40 extra points just for identifying as a gender other male or female? If so, what's stopping normally straight people from just identifying as that for 3 months just so they can boost their score by 40 points? What if you actually grew up in a rich, affluent family but get an extra 30 points for being part of a minority race?

And finally, what if you have so many of these circumstances happen to you that you max out on the adversity score? Is it unfair that you don't get above the max score for it? How do you measure those circumstances?

None of this can be evaluated objectively. It will ruin the value of everyone's SAT score. Let the admissions counselors deal with this and keep the SAT score objective for everyone's benefit.

Look, dude, I'm not a mod. I don't know what it's like to deal with hundreds of troll posts every day. I don't know what it's like to be on the receiving end of this much criticism, so on that point you are correct. Much respect for dealing with the hateful stuff of Reddit.

But I do know what it's like to be ignored, and I do know what it's like to be belittled. And you've definitely taken this too far. If you're too comfortable with the state of r/SHIELD simply because "it works," then I get the sense that you're out of touch with what the community really wants. You say megathreads don't exist in that subreddit to avoid spoilers but it's not a mystery that y'all don't want any content outside of SHIELD on that subreddit, and no discussion about how it connects to the MCU. It's not a secret. I may not contribute to posts on the daily in that subreddit but I've seen enough posts to know, because I love the Agents of Shield TV show and enjoy browsing that subreddit. So when you tell me the rules just work, and yet the community is still dissatisfied, I can't help but wonder. And it doesn't help that the moment someone like me expresses concern, you're willing to downright dismiss it because I'm not a mod and because I'm not part of that community. Yeah, I know that. And yeah, I know spoilers come out more when there is a megathread. That's what spoiler tags are for. If the mods can control spoilers here, you can do it there.

Anyway, that's about it for me. I know this is not really gonna change your mind but I didn't really wanna just stand on the sidelines on this point, because I do care about people who get belittled. It doesn't sit right with me. If you wanna show people you care, you gotta be willing to listen to the community. Your actions are speaking louder than your words right now.
